The match then exploded 13 minutes from half time when Asquith full-back Jack Hawkins appeared to be winded in a tackle thanks to some extra attention over the top from Colts second rower Addison Demetriou.

Both touch judge Furner and referee Olford saw no problem with the tackle – opening the opportunity for payback by fired up teammates of Hawkins.

Over the next three minutes, memories of the late controversial referee Barry ‘the Grasshopper’ Gomersall were revived as on two separate occasions fights and melees broke out away from the play – while Olford chose to ignore the fights to referee the actual play as Gomersall infamously did during his career.

Magpies’ prop Brendan Hurd tried to come after Demetriou and came off second best as the Colts man slung him like a rag doll to the ground. Colts’ French interchange prop Thibaud Braconnier then took on Hurd in back play as Olford and his touch judges lost control of the game.

Braconnier and Hurd were eventually sent to the sin bin for 10 minutes by Olford when play calmed down.

Demetriou then played his ace hand while both sides were down to 12 men. Five minutes before half time, the second rower ran on to a superb pass from Colts half Abbas Miskie to score near the posts and extend the lead to 18-0 with his own conversion.

Demetriou’s crowning play came two minutes later when standing wide from a scrum win, he shrugged off two would be tacklers and showed the pace of a centre to dash 75 metres to score his second try in the right corner.

For good measure, Demetriou taunted the Asquith cover defence on the way to the try line with a wave of the hand in cheeky delight. The chunky second rower converted from touch to give the Colts their 24-0 half time lead.

Demtriou had won the fight – and ensured that his skill would win the football.

NRL COMBINE EXPERIMENT PAYS OFF AS SEA EAGLES SIGN ADDISON DEMETRIOU
23/10/2014 · by Sea Eagles Blog · in Manly Warringah Sea Eagles, Sea Eagles News, Sea Eagles Player Movement. ·
Earlier this month the first NRL Combine Camp took place on the Gold Coast, based on the NFL Combine, the camp was organised by management group Pacific Sports Management (PSM).

From all reports the camp was a big hit and the NRL would be wise to look in to getting more involved, the NFL Combine is a televised week long program on the American football calendar and provides the league with an event that keeps eyes and minds on the game throughout a long off season.

The camp was split in to two groups (17-19 years of age and over 20 years of age) and run over two days with participants having their skills, strength and speed tested on one day and a trial matches being played on the other, all in front of NRL scouts and front office personnel.

NRL players and coaches were involved in the event and Manly’s own Brenton Lawrence, who was a late bloomer in the NRL competition, was an ambassador for the camp which provided an opportunity for players to get noticed and for others a second crack at making it in the NRL.

The Sea Eagles obviously took notice of the event with Recruitment Manager Dave Warwick saying “Congratulation to PSM on hosting the very first Rugby League Combine Camp. It was a terrific success with a host of talent on hand. It was especially great to see NRL talent like Greg Bird show some passion towards assisting the next generation of NRL hopefuls.”

Tony Adams published an article on the camp in the latest Rugby League Week and reported that 11 of 16 NRL clubs were in attendance and players from as far as Darwin, Perth and New York attended. He also reports Manly signed a young player as a result of his efforts at the combine.

“I had my opportunity and let myself down with my discipline and had to step away from the game to mature,” said Addison Demetriou

“I saw this Camp advertised on Facebook and thought to myself it would be a good idea as I needed a second chance.

“I was luckily enough to perform at the Camp, which turned into a two-year deal at Manly”

Demetriou is no stranger to NRL clubs, the hard hitting back rower came through the Canterbury junior system playing in their Harold Matthews and SG Ball teams between 2010 and 2012, he also made the Australian schoolboys U/15 side in 2010 and NSW U/16 Origin team in 2011.

He dropped off the radar a touch in 2013 after failing a drug test for cannabis use late in 2012 while at the Bulldogs but did emerge in 2014 as a bench player for the Rooster’s NYC team, the youngster still has one year of NYC eligibility to his credit and should add to the promising crop of juniors Manly has coming through the lower grades.
