Abolish 6-again and use common sense for high tackles

My interest in Rugby league is about two out of ten right now. They get one point because I enjoy watching Turbo, and another point because we are sixth. Gone are the weekends when I watched every game. I cancelled Kayo sports yesterday. Boring, boring, boring.
Fair enough buddy...if it wasn't free for me I probably would not watch any games anymore...and that is F sad.

You know, when they brought in the 6 again I thought (and posted on here) that I didn't think it was too bad an idea.

Because with penalties these days.... one team does a minor infraction and the other team then boots the ball 20-30 metres upfield into touch, then they get a whole set of 6 (40+ metres minimum?) and so the penalty was just too great field position wise. 70 metres because you were half a second too slow to get up? Ouch!

Maybe it was ok when the ball was basically lead then the kick for touch wasn't so far.

My only caveat was that the refs will still need to treat the 6 agains as 'a substitute' for a penalty. that was also what we were told was going to happen.

Yet, they stuffed it up. the refs give away 6 agains as a 'it's only a half penalty' measure and the game has been plunged into the dark abyss most of you are lamenting. (Most)

Reducing the wrestle (for me) has been a positive and so if the refs stop blowing 6 agains to 'massage' games and for non penalty infractions, the high tackle sin binning's get sorted, and the bunker stop with their 50% success rate...it might be a good game to watch!

(I haven't watched all games for years. Just Manly).

If it wasn’t for Manly I’d definitely switch to AFL……watching any other teams play is boring, watching SOO has become boring. The NRL is to blame with their poor excuses re the state of the game. Listening to the inept dribble from journos & biased commentators has turned me right off. The favouritism afforded to some teams by the NRL increasingly pi$$es me off. The poor Knights seem to always be facing an injury crisis yet Manly has no injuries. No other team has injuries. Really? Fvck off the lot of them. If the NRL was to fold tomorrow it wouldn’t bother me. I agree about the concussion issues & that players need to be protected, but the way they’re going about it is a shambles & shows how unprofessional the NRL has become. Then the excuses from that knob jockey Annesley about why this is a send off & this isn’t is so confusing & shows what a dumb cvnt he is…..rant over.
PS Manly by 30 plus today!!!!!!!

Valid rant mate and all good points. I just can’t for the life of me think that the nrl brains trust are sitting there thinking “gee this is a great product”. If we’re lucky there are two close games a week. The anti manly rhetoric is just something I’ve gotten use to. Turbo has helped on that front this year.

One thing that has contributed to the downfall in the quality of footy is the removal of the U20s competition.

Yes, it wasn’t the most defensive style of game, but it gave the younger players the chance to train more with the full time NRL squad more than what is happening under the current system.

Now you look at our current NSW Cup side at Blacktown, or even our Jersey Flegg side. I can guarantee barely any of those players actually get to train with the NRL squad.

So with that , changes I’d like to see include:
  • Bring back the NYC competition, and increase the age group from u20s to u21s and every team must play under the same franchise as the NRL team. None of thise Newtown/Blacktown crap.
  • Keep the 6 again rule, but adjust it by reverting inside-10 and markers not square back to penalties.
  • Give the referees more discretion when it comes to head high tackles.

Sorry state if affairs, and while I haven't cancelled Kayo yet I am watching less League than ever and because of the cr@p being dished up by ref's, the bunker and NRL headquarters.

Sure the Storm game looked a little one-sided when it got to 60-nil after 50 minutes.
But the Tiges fought back to win the last 20 minutes 16-6, so a decent contest at times anyhow.
Hey I happened to hear Roy and HG yesterday suggesting doing away with the sidelines and goalposts. I'm wondering, do we really need points? And keeping score?
We could just let the game naturally evolve into a brilliant circus exhibition of footy skills, and not worry about all this winning and losing stuff. Which on balance does produce more heartache than joy, when you think about it.

I'm paying $180 for the family to go watch the game today. I want to see a fair contest not some ref influenced farce because of ridiculous rule interpretations, rubbish set restarts and joke sin bins. If it happens today I won't be wasting my money again.

It would surprise me if they abolish the set restarts(6 again) rule. As long as they keep the set restarts in place,it gives the refs power in more ways than one. They get to control who gets to the line and basically can choose who wins the game and which team they would even want to score points if it ever came to that. Look what happened to us in our Newcastle game. That game was far from a normal game and something I won’t forget anytime soon. They give out set restarts for little as nothing in today’s game and if it was penalties instead then the refs can’t hide their own errors in judgement. These set restarts are nothing more than politics, and to a degree defeats the purpose of even competing. Even these captains challenges are an escape for the refs own stupid blunders so they don’t look bad. Instead they put the pressure on the players to ref for them. Nothing like doing your own tax hey. The NRL have it all worked out so they don’t shame their own faces. Pure politics and nothing but.

Watching the second half again (think I'll leave the first half for now)

It seems the crackdown on anything high has subsided. there seemed to be quite a few over the shoulders that were being let go in the Manly game.

it's said wisdom starts with calling things by their true name

so it's best to always call it by it's full name, the "6 again TMC" rule

TMC = Total Momentum Control

The refereeing has become a joke. Egotistical little twerps that speak to the stars of the game with total disrespect. I don't pay my hard earned to watch those numb nuts ruin a game of football.

The main issue is not actually the ref blowing set restarts.

It is actually the threat of it. This obviously has sped the passages of when the ball is in play up enormously.

Momentum being too hard to stop is the problem.
Fatigue causes dropped ball, lazy high arms, deliberate attempts to slow the ruck, etc, which cause more possession to the opposition which leads to even more fatigue.

It's an endless momentum cycle that is clearly too hard to reverse, even for the best sides.

Essentially, we have gone too far the other way, and taken options away for teams to remain competitive within the contest, once a couple of small things go against them.

I've been reliably told that this is no issue, because players should just learn to tackle lower.

Lmao
And when attacking players slip the defender should either immediately fall to the ground or jump out of the way rather than have the attacking player accidently hit their arm or shoulder

Only watch Manly play now as the rest of the games are unwatchable

Unfortunately set restarts are a blight on traditional rugby league. But so was wrestling, and deliberately slowing down the ruck. Clearly the one size fits all approach of six agains isnt working like it was supposed to. The application of this by refs has also been very inconsistent, and needs to be scrapped. What do we replace it with?

Agree, the only way even the best teams can recover is a long break so it starts from near scratch again. A 5 minute injury stoppage could swing it the opposite way. Oranges saved us last week.
