A players worth?

The top teams wouldn't pay more than $1,000,0000
Those clubs know you also need a team of above-average players and to pay them fairly so they stick around.

Clubs like the Tigers and Dogs might pay $1,400,000 but don't spend the money wisely and end up with a team of overpaid journeymen.
Tom at the dogs this year would just be another fullback just doing his job without a chance of being the Dally M player of the year. He would be a great player still but you still need a team around you to allow you to do your magic.
If Tom is in that dogs team they wouldn’t win the spoon imo. His influence alone would be worth around another 3-5 wins for them. He also lifts all those other guys like Corey Allan, cotric, Hoppa, okonbur, schoupp etc. I mean look at what he’s done for our outside backs.

When DCE got his Massive payday I thought "This is ridiculous, not worth THAT much pay"...
In fact, I kind of still have these thoughts, but have Massive respect for what DCE brings and often does not get the credit he deserves.
Then....I see Hunt, Moses, Ash Taylor types on similar money and think - we didn't go too bad after all....
Lol Hayne at titans springs to mind

If you draw a linear relationship between player salary and ability then Tommy would command top dollar if he was on the open market. He is currently the best player in the NRL in terms of skill set AND ability to influence a game in my opinion. He is worth $1.2mil easily, and so he should be in his current form. Teddy and Turbo are two players who can influence a game no matter what you put around them.

DCE is overpaid based on this simple skill vs pay metric. He isn't even the best halfback in the competition let alone the best player. But that just shows that salary doesn't always reflect ability. DCE had good timing on his side when he negotiated his deal - market factors worked in his favour in that there weren't many options available. Plus the club gambled on him improving and becoming a dominant player and "growing" into that salary. That didn't happen, but good luck for him that he stitched up a lifetime deal on the top coin. He is a solid player for sure and you get durability and marketability too - so there are some intangibles there in his pay packet. When you see some of the coin being thrown at other halves then you can't say he is horribly overpaid, but certainly not best player in NRL by any stretch.

His marshalling from the back is second to none, it's hard to imagine any team receiving the spoon with Turbo in the one, his maturity over the past couple of seasons is astounding

Tommy is definitely worth more than DCE but you have to remember Halfbacks are worth more than Fullbacks. There is less quality in the HB player pool and it is a more pivotal position.

A good HB can make an average FB look good.
A good FB can't do much with a poor HB.

DCE would be the second best halfback in the comp, to Nathan Cleary. In defence I'd rate him the best; he does a mountain of tackling. I'd also rate him no. 1 in durability. He rarely misses a match. Cleary missed 4-5 recently, and most of the other halfbacks I can think of miss matches through injury.
Turbo will always have lingering doubts over potential injuries.
When you pay big money you want that player on the field, which is what DCE provides. And as Bozo says, he is an excellent role model and club representative.

One could make a case to suggest his resilience is partly due to his avoidance. good ball players get whacked for there craft. its part of the territory and to be a good ball player you constantly have to put yourself in a place to be whacked to suck in defenders. the NRL has spent the last decade making rules to protect playmakers as a result

in footy talk this is not DCE go ,
Jason Taylor played a similar role and was blessed with this resilience also. pass early, run sideways, stand 15m behind play to kick although this is improving

every week tom dusts himself off from big hits as he releases the ball and those tackles are jolting. all playmakers do .NOT DCE go.

its kind of like the bradman theory that if you dont hit the ball in the air you reduce the ways you can get out
if you dont run in harms way you reduce the chance of injury which sounds smart except its a RL forum

DCE is still a very resilient sportsman but its a workable theory.

PS . just a heads up, im going to need examples. LOL
