6pm Friday Games

DESpicable Manly
So this year you would have noticed that most rounds the Friday night games are 6pm and 8pm. (Our first one is Rd5 v Chooks).

Whilst I think the Sat arvo games are great, I am not too convinced on this timeslot.

This is an interesting time slot, because for alot of us who work, 6pm isnt the easiest time to meet for both viewing live (on fox I believe) or attending the game.

I would say its more accommodating for people with young families who wish to attend, and a little bit warmer in winter.

Thoughts?

Mixed, fine for me although as you mentioned a real dud timeslot for those in or returning from work

Can't cotton onto this time slot on Fridays

Just won't make it with work

Not a fan of Thursday either and would have preferred Monday nights for the extra game

Could always keep entertained on a Thursday with something but Monday nights will now be a drag

6pm Makes no sense to me. Only people that don't work and kids can make it to a game at that time. Plus the joys of peak time Friday arvo traffic and packed public transport to deal with to get there.
Appears a worse option than Monday 7pm was.

I can't understand it. Honestly even disregarding the absolute crapshoot it would be trying to get to a game live, how does it work as a TV time slot for anyone other than a single worker who knocks off on a Friday and goes straight from work to the pub.

There's no way anyone finishing at five with a family is going to have homework, sports training, dinner ready, small kids bathed, etc etc sorted in time to sit down and actually enjoy a game at this time.

And up here while you still have daylight savings down there the game will start at 1630. It's a joke.

Radio will be licking their lips though, lot of people still in cars when the game starts.

i get why people dont like it, but its not to bad imo.. i HATED waiting until monday to watch manly play, esp when we had 5 mon nite games over a 10 round period,so im glad they got rid of mon nights.. love thursday footy, just seems to bring the weekend on so much quicker when theres footy starting on a thurs nite..
the time slot that bothers me is the 2pm sunday games.. i work every weekend, and while i finish at 4 and am able to rush home n only miss the first 5 mins of that game, i never get to watch the 2 game.. meaning i havnt see manly play the warriors or raiders in about 5 years, as they always seem to get that sun 12 or 2 slot

to be fair most people don't work Sunday afternoons, the needs of many.

to be fair, those people who do work Sunday's should receive a premium but the government doesn't think so.

PS I miss about 6 - 7 weekends of footy due to work so do understand your pain, its the only time I crave a Monday (not Thursday) game

As we've been saying for more than a decade, it's all about TV.
The fans who take the trouble, and spend the money, to attend matches are a secondary consideration. I'm sure this is one factor in low membership numbers. Why bother when every match is televised?

It's a plain and simple move from Fox to dig into 9's Friday Night Football ratings. There's no thought about the fans and people getting to the game / or being ready to sit down and watch at that time etc.

They simply slot the game in before the other one... then why would anyone in their right mind with fox switch over to 9 for the second game... they hold onto that audience from the first game. It's all about eyballs on screen.

Personally I would prefer they moved it to 6pm Sunday.

Have a Thurs 7.30, Friday 7.30, Sat x3 (3.30pm, 5.30pm, 7.30pm) and Sunday x3 (2pm, 4pm, 6pm).

Also I dont really know what the obsession is with having every live game separate. How many of you (or know someone who) watches all 8 games in a weekend.

The most I watched was 7 games about 5 years ago, and only because I was home crook. Typically I watch Manly and mabye 1 more.

And the TV coverage gets better , more technical, closer to the action , pre shows , post shows , beers at bottle shop prices, no getting wet so you can't blame people.

Mind you nothing beats the camaraderie and the atmosphere , but they don't make it easy do they?
