I'm not following your train of thought... if everyone is aspiring to be middle class & following a "middle class" game (or the bright new shiny game in town) then the Union and AFL crowds would be sells out in Sydney and Brisbane. This is far from the case.

Swans crowds are very healthy. I can't think of an NRL team that consistently matches them. Maybe the Broncs?

Just under 13k. If we had beaten the worms the previous Sunday I'm sure it would have been higher. I think we averaged about 11K a game at Brookvale. Very disappointing indeed.

Given the size of the potential supporter bases of both the swines and donleys, I'd say those figures are just as poor as the Sydney NRL clubs.

We should be looking at the Demons, Hawthorn and Richmond (constant battlers, constant success and new found success) if we want to compare our clubs and see what that leaves us with. I don't know how we get to that level. There is an intrinsic apathy in the Sydney psyche. I know I have it. I get to Manly games but on a broader scale, my enthusiasm for getting out and supporting things is intermittent at best.

That is true, but on the same note, that is the case in Melbourne and the AFL pull solid crowds.

This year so far (Avg per game):
Richmond: 48,366
Collingwood: 48,319
Hawthorn: 41,357
etc...

The worst AFL Melbourne based team for crowd figures is St Kilda at 26,450.

AFL live is better than TV because you can see the movement around the field, there is very little skill in close, it is more about the larger scale. NRL is the opposite, it is a very tight game compared and therefore TV assists in seeing a lot of the skill there close up.

To be fair you can usually get a family pass for around the same price as two adults.. Also, the family passes just say family pass - 4 adults could use it & nobody would know...

It's really not a my sport is better than your sport thing. OK, so the NRL is better on TV. Meanwhile the AFL enjoys massive memberships, massive crowds, big rights deals - all of which generates money which gets pumped back into the kids who are the future players/crowds/viewers.
Right now, the NRL has a problem. And to my thinking, if they don't do something to bums on seats and boost junior involvement, then in a couple of decades they will be defunct.

don't wanna sound too negative but there's a few reasons I'd guess. Cost as said above; commercialising it to the point where you have advertising/ gambling sh*t at every opportunity .. Stunts like Carney's really encourage parents to want their kids to get involved ; other sports as mentioned above - fitba of the round ball type taking most young people now in NSW - Sydney at least. Crap commentators on 9. Disengagement from the community - like with English football the players used to be the normal bloke who had a job like your dad . Changing it and trying to take it where it's not wanted - Homebush stadium for starters. Fingers in the till etc etc People just get jack of it.

Without Manly and Brookvale it'd be NSW cup occasionally.

I thoroughly agree.

1) it is not like the olden days to take the family to the footy and enjoy the day, without breaking the bank. These days you need a mountain of cash to watch a game. If you have kids attending it does not help.

2) foxtel- the nrl signed huge contracts to show almost all games on TV. This I believe is the biggest issue as to why attendences are down.
When I was a kid we had 1 friday night game, 1 saturday afternoon game (abc) and 1 sunday game.

If I did not travel to other grounds like wollongong, newcastle and the game was not shown on TV, I would not see the mighty sea eagles maybe for 2 or 3 weeks until they were on TV again.

Now you can see them every week on foxtel with a click of the remote.

The good thing back then (when I was a kid), was that Zorba was a radio broadcaster and was well clear of destroying our club, they were great memories!!

Cost has to be a factor.

Especially if you start talking about a family of 4. The price of food is a joke. It would cost $100 at a minimum to attend a game. Money a lot of people simply can't justify.

There's so much spoken about this but I'm yet to see a club really address it. Drop the price to $10 for adults and halve the price of food. A family should be able to attend a game for $50 at the most. Isn't it supposed to be a working class game ?

the game at Brookie v Cronulla the other week. They reduced the price of food and people were queuing still at kick -off (kids for free that day?). Sell more, sponsors are happy, roger mellie man on the telly is pleased and there's atmosphere.

To be fair the kids membership is a good thing and reasonable even if they only do 3 home games or so.. makes the dad's go as to plan.

Wouldn't call it a mountain of cash

It is very similar to going to the movies in pricing and you can see 2 games about 3 hours worth instead of only 2 hours worth.
