5/8 options,is it necessary

Left field options for our poem number six jersey

Is a true 5/8 or half really required? Do you think it would be to our detriment not actually having one? Why not teach a back rower how to kick occasionally? We have a multitude of options to put boot to ball so why spend the big bucks on a position which in our team is probably superfluous? Strengthen the pack and give the 6 to Mateo, Buhrer or Symonds

Gone are the days of halves pairing the like of Toovey/Hasler and Lyons,i think it's like having an outside centre and probably an outdated ideal

Previous premiership winning 5\8's
Luke keary
James Maloney
Widdop
Foran
Soward
Finch
Lyon
Inglis
Lockyer

Seems its hard to win without a recognised 5/8.
I recognise most of them but I could probably recognise a lot of NRL players from just seeing them on the telly all the time...

Point taken, although I wouldn't note Inglis or Lyon as recognised 5/8's. Both have played 5/8 outstandingly yes, but both could probably play any position in the backline with great success. Individual talent is something that is hard to argue against, but even Tony Williams won a grand final at 5/8. Albeit in Q-Cup.

And i dont really count ingliss or finch as having won a premiership.

I think you need a good ball distributor at 5/8. Someone quick, elusive and with a good sense of when to pass the ball. Where would Manly have been without Cliffy Lyons and Alan Thompson. The loss of Foran is a heavy sacrifice. We need someone to link effectively between DCE and the centres and also someone to take the pressure off DCE. Yes we need an effective 5/8 even today.

Mateo is the only one of our current squad who could do the job justice.

And lets not forget that this option is only available to us because of the brilliant ball playing ability of our fullback.

Interesting list but there is a dearth of halves at the moment

Soward and Lockyer were both dominant halves,Locky is the next immortal to most,Sowwie started in the 7 from memory

Lyon and Inglis were centres thrown there because reasons

Maloney is a bit lockish without the defensive capabilites, was a passenger

Widdop is a fullback and played second fiddle, Finch a half and Foran is a mini lock but probably the most like a even match given DCE was a rookie

Luke Keary however is the goods, he does have a face most would love to punch

The 7s in your list were

A Reynolds who has a kicking game and little else
Pearce who didn't do much
Cronk the perfect robot and clutch
DCE
I don't remember from saints
Cronk
Orford the magnificent
Cronk
And saving the best to last Shane Perry...

Out of all those years only twice was the expectation on both halves even

Definitely need a specialist half. Too much pressure on playing just the one ball player. It's still so important to have that alternate play maker. It's a specialist position that I feel is vital if you want to win a premiership (and history show's that).

We won a premiership with Lyon at 5/8, true. But to me, Gifty was massive in that game! All our players were fantastic, but Glenn stood out the most. Can we have him back to play 5/8??

Will be interested to see if the hints dropped about Tom T being capable of playing 6 come to anything over the off season

We have won a premiership with Killer at 5/8 in 2008 and we won 40 nil

Catch 22 for me. Snake or Tom T to 5/8? I think Brett to 5/8 weakens us at the back, BUT...all and sundry tell me that Tom T is our future fullback. I guess the smart move in that situation would be to move a battle hardened Brett into 5/8 and let a still developing Tom T have a go at fullback. ???? I have NFI!

Yes its amazballs that perry won a comp!

The biggest thing for me is the amount of kicking those 5\8's could do. If the halfback is off you need someone to stand up and take control so weather we have a legit 5\8 or not the player must have kicking skills
- Unless you have a nine like scam smith.

Scott Dureau will win us a premiership next year. Certainly won't play any worse than Foran has for the past 12 months

DCE to lock. :)

Honestly though, did you see the Titans game? Big Dave's 10m drop out to regain the ball...awesome! I've said it numerous times on here, the NRL has not seen Dave at his footloose and fancy free best. He can do anything.

I've watched him from schoolboy footy. The commentators from that game this week said he was practicing goal kicking, drop outs, field goals etc during the warm up. They thought it was some sort of bluff. LOL! It's not. I'm telling you from what I've seen with my own eyes....you need to give Dave a free reign on the field and he will give you points.

Dave plays his best footy unstructured. He would make an awesome bench weapon to bring on after 20min with the instructions....play whatever is in front of you.

In saying all that....he is playing for a contract, soooooo.....

Just make sure he is strapped into bed at night.
Id say that the coal train has sailed. If he was committed and had the right coaches he coul have been the player you know he could have.
