Just don't watch have your own little boycott session, absolute slap in the face to other players and fans from other clubs.

Boycotting won't achieve anything, too many QLD fans will be ok with it.

Think about it. If Manly had an exhibition match that allowed us to pay a huge extra chunk of cash to say DCE or one of the Turbos, thereby allowing us to avoid having to upgrade their contracts under the actual cap and giving us an unfair competitive advantage.... How many Manly fans do you think would turn up to the game?

Just another rort. Very unprofessional from the NRL. Subjectiveness is nearly always abused and is always the case in league land.

In yesteryear testimonials were common place but never a game. Dinners and functions were available to long term players in the twilight of there careers and the proceeds from them. A bit like a retirement gift. Its fair to say ch 9 see this as a ratings winner and will be part of the decision process

Lets be frank though any player at the top of the game now does not need this , in this era. Also super is now part of the collective agreement

It was a great way of keeping ageing players in the games as clubs saw veterens worth drop onfield but cherished the leadership they provided to the team environment

What happens if either player decides to run around in 2019. Those payments should then be included in the cap with both thurston and cronks contract on present value included as well. Not negotiable

I just have a feeling at least one will back up again.

One thing we need to consider though is that smith and JT already have hefty contracts included in next years cap. So its not as bad as it seems . Its just like the NRL sponsoring there lifestyle. If both clubs are prepared to write off the monies then its there business it seems. Just gets mirky if they play on

Gallen should be able to get one as well if ch 9 writes the script, that its played in brisbane, cronulla lose, gallen is knocked out cold, carried off and is seen crying in the change rooms then it will surely get the go ahead.

Gallen will be assured a very finacial farewell if he agrees to this. Its like the block, masterchef , backyard blitz and a little bit of origin all on one night. Just ensure its not played in daylight savings. Qld will hate nsw knowing the result an hour earlier

Greenturds comments about this rort confirm the need for urgent regime change at the NRL. The breathtaking double standards under this guys watch get worse. The salary cap is, even more, a farce now. You compare this rort with clubs requests for dispensation for injured players and again the inconsistency is breathtakingly unfair. Our game needs true leadership and ASAP the club bosses must get rid of Greenturd

A few thoughts:

1. I love this. Every poor decisions made by the NRL helps expose their ridiculous nature. I for one LOVE that manly get ripped off - it shows we are the honest, genuine, rule abiding club. I don't want their dirty tricks and favours..... it makes our victories all the sweeter.
2. fair play to their clubs for the idea. Expect no less from them - they are smart and well run (and dodgy as all hell)
3. Scam and the reformed Bulldog should donate the money to charity like most decent humans in their position.
4. NRL and Rugby league is no longer a sport - it is entertainment. The sooner people realise this, the better. There is no such thing as a competition, or luck in this game any more - we are more WWE than UFC people..... why are people in denial so much? Rugby League is on a downward spiral and dying a slow death..... embrace it 🙂

I thought each player had a minimum nominal value that they were to be paid under the cap? In which case, the monies received from this testimonial game should not count towards their contract value.

They would still need to be paid a certain value under the cap which would stop the clubs paying them $200k as attributed to the cap + $750k through this testimonial game.

That's what I thought as well. I think of it as the Lockyer rule when he was only paid 100k 'from the cap'. Manly also said at the time they didn't offer gifty a contract as it would be so small the nrl wouldn't accept it.

Maybe the two players will donate their money to causes that help ex-nrl players that are doing it tough and who don't have all the chances that those two will get post playing. Many volunteers work hard for these guys.

I love the theory of a testimonial game...for players who have been forced out of the game or to raise money for the men of league or similar.

As always the issue for me here is the complete lack of consistency. How would this be managed for a 10 year ham and egger? Just the usual inconsistent rubbish
