Bush Beat: Jamie Lyon too good for Todd Carney in country cracker
MATT LOGUETHE DAILY TELEGRAPH MAY 28, 2019Former NRL, Origin and Australian stars Todd Carney and Jamie Lyon posing ahead of last Sunday’s clash against each other in the Northern Rivers competition.

Lyon’s Ballina Seagulls claimed a comprehensive 30-6 victory over Carney’s Byron Bay Red Devils at Kingsford Smith Park in Ballina.

The marquee match-up attracted a big-game crowd of 3500 people.

Todd Carney and Jamie Lyon headlined a massive country footy clash in Ballina.

Lyon was a standout for Ballina with a try assist and five goals from six attempts.

Carney carried a rib injury into the game but finished with a try assist and a 40/20.

Ballina football club manager Max Beecher said the Lyon versus Carney match-up was an historic occasion for bush footy.

“There was a real buzz around town,” Beecher told Bush Beat.

“It was a great day and a good game of country footy.

“I’ve got mates from Sydney and from up the coast who came to watch the match.”

Lyon’s influence on Byron Bay has been significant.

Inspired by the two-time premiership winner, the Seagulls sit equal first on the ladder after eight rounds.

Beecher says the key to Lyon’s success is genuine care for the players.

“The way Jamie has taken on the role of captain-coach here at Ballina has been so good,” he said.

“The young fellas in the team and the juniors around the club are really buzzing from his involvement.

“Jamie passes on his knowledge to all the grades.”

Beecher says Carney is attracting similar praise at Byron Bay.

The Red Devils are in eighth position but only three wins outside the top four.

“All the reports about Todd have been positive,” he said.

“He is really trying to get the club going forward. He has been a good influence on everyone and helping out all the young players.”

Beecher hopes Carney and Lyon’s bush footy stints paves the way for other NRL players to finish their careers in the country.

He has fond memories of ex-first graders dominating the regional ranks and he would like to see it return.

“Maybe the NRL can have something like a retirement fund that can help out bush clubs that are really struggling,” he said.

“Every year they could bump up the player’s wage or give the player a job as a development officer.

“It will be worth it because what Jamie Lyon is doing for our club at Ballina is outstanding.

“We are blown away with his contribution actually. We didn’t know what to expect because he is a quiet guy but he has gone at it 100 per cent and given everything he can.”

Can’t see Ballina being beaten this year. They are always strong, but with Killer there, they are basically unbeatable.
