So sporting news stating Hasler will never return to the Sea Eagles while Rick, Heather and Scott Penn have their hands on the lever

Only a change of club ownership will open the door for the return of Des Hasler to Manly.

The two-time grand final-winning coach is being linked to a Brookvale comeback following Trent Barrett’s resignation, but that won’t happen as long as the Penn family maintain control of the club.

Time has not healed the Penns’ wounds over Hasler’s acrimonious departure to the Bulldogs in the days following Manly’s 2011 title win.

The matter almost ended up in court after chairman Scott Penn sacked Hasler for ‘serious contract breaches’.

“If he wants to bring it on in court, let's go,'' Penn said at the time.

The Penns accused Hasler of coercing staff to leave Manly for Canterbury, declaring he had ‘a blatant disregard for his contract’.

Hasler countered: ''The allegations made against me are without any foundation whatsoever.''

Fast forward seven years and the Penns are still in charge at Manly while Hasler has been out of work for nearly 12 months after his stint at Canterbury also ended in bitter circumstances.

There has been a general feeling in NRL circles that Hasler’s use-by date has been reached and his high maintenance ways no longer justify on-field results.

But Barrett’s abrupt departure threatened to dramatically change the landscape.

Manly are now on the lookout for a new coach and Hasler’s name has been thrown up as a prime candidate.

The thinking is sound.

Hasler was part of the Manly fabric for more than 20 years, as player, conditioner and coach.

He is infused with the much talked about Sea Eagles DNA, which really means he understands and can manage all the politics that go hand-in-hand with coaching the maroon and whites.

And he has won competitions using the same facilities and resources Barrett cites as one of the reasons he wants out, although it’s fair to point out Hasler’s playing roster was far superior.

Dessie is keen to return to coaching but it won’t be at Manly.

Not while Rick, Heather and Scott Penn have their hands on the lever.

As soon as I saw the posted headline... I knew it was from the sporting drivel.

That said, I feel they have something right; no matter how many times certain posters continually type "Des and 2V sitting in a tree, waiting for a chance to coach Manly"; the owners views on these two gentlemen all but assure that neither are going to be coaching here.

I’m sure when Penn interviews someone for a senior position in his company “do I like this person” comes a long way after “will this person do the job well” and “will this person make me a **** load of cash”.

Personally I think De$ isn’t only the past I think he’s “ passed it”.

As much as my views are tainted with his departure I cannot denigrate what he did for us in the period 2006-2011, and he should be revered for that.

BUT

Let’s face the facts that he went to a club with unlimited power and an unlimited budget , and whilst successful still didn’t get them the ultimate prize.

If ( and that’s a very big if) he was accorded the reins at Manly from 2019 he wouldn’t have anywhere near what he had at the Bulldogs AND sorry but Leopards don’t change their spots.

I know so many of you view him as the saviour but all I can see is long term misery with another acrimonious departure at some point.

And for that reason I’d be very very surprised if the Penn’s approved him being chosen.

I know there are a lot of mixed emotions on this topic and I sit on the fence.

I was gutted when he left and especially in the way that it happened however if we had a board and owners that weren't so at each other's throats just maybe he wouldn't have left.

I still think he has some usefulness to help steady the sinking ship maybe a role in some capacity, maybe not as the coach but I sure do think he could help and advise in some capacity like a director of football and maybe 2V coaching.

Des in not our only road that will lead us another premiership

If he does not coach us again so be it

Many roads lead to another premiership and the Barrett express lane is not one of them

So - if not Des & Toove's then who... We've done the rookie thing twice now & hit a slide on both.

I can't think of a better combo available to start next season...

With unlimited resources, apparently " " Penn believes Neil Henry is as good a coach as money can buy. Bull***t.

please NO, average winning rate of 44% , (titans 37%), We need a coach, not a mate or rookie or prentender...!

Toovey 52%

Des 58%

Toovey is batting at 58% regular season games or 56% if you include all finals series games.
