Eastern Suburbs, Sydney City, Sydney Roosters, The Roosters................Since 1908 they have called themselves many a name and it seems that for the Centenary Celebration of Rugby League they are doing so again.
Yes that's right, for the 2008 NRL season the Roosters will be known simply as the RSPCA.
Chief Executive Brian Canavan explains that the Roosters need to move with the times. "With the re-emergence of Souths as the premier Rugby League Club in the area we felt the need to once again turn our back on all of our history and change our name for the fifth time in 100 years".
"After meeting with some pre-eminent marketing guru's we wanted a name that represented the culture of our club and define exactly who we really are".
With the recent signing's of Anasta, Myles, O'Meley and Mason it was felt that the new name of RSPCA fits well with our culture of "continually collecting unwanted dogs".
What better name could we possibly have then RSPCA? Mr Canavan went onto explain................
