An assault charge against Manly rugby league player Steve Matai has been dismissed by a Sydney magistrate.

Matai, 22, had been accused of assaulting 31-year-old Mona Vale man Joseph Nasser at the Surf Rock Hotel at Collaroy on Sydney's northern beaches on June 10.

Matai was cleared of headbutting Mr Nasser after pleading not guilty to the assault charge in Downing Centre Local Court

Interestingly the judge said the victims story was the more believable but a bouncer at the club testified that Matai was headbutted by the victim and so it created enough doubt for acquittal. That Kennedy was the target of some abuse was surprising.
