Asbestos concerns put Lottoland in doubt as finals venue

Manly are in danger of losing their first home final in over a decade due to the discovery of asbestos traces on the famous Brookvale Oval hill.

Just hours after the Sharks booked their passage to the post-season and set up a Battle of the Beaches with their famed rivals, the NRL announced the venue will remain 'TBC' until a safety report on Lottoland is lodged on Monday evening.

Via a media release on Sunday night, the NRL said that testing around Manly's planned centre of excellence construction had revealed isolated traces of asbestos on the northern end of the Lottoland hill.

Bankwest Stadium has been pencilled in as the alternate venue for Saturday's elimination fixture if Lottoland is not up to scratch, with all ticket sales on hold for 24 hours until the scheduling can be confirmed.

"Our number one priority is ensuring the safety of our players and fans. Unfortunately it could not be guaranteed when the schedule was confirmed," NRL CEO Todd Greenberg said.

"We have given the local council and the Sea Eagles a period of grace of 24 hours in order to assess the safety of the venue before we release tickets.

"We have worked with Northern Beaches Council and the Sea Eagles to ensure the club is given the opportunity to host a final, while ensuring the safety of our supporters is paramount."

The discovery of asbestos is just the latest drama around Manly's iconic home ground, which hasn't hosted a finals game since 2007.

Last week's banning of a fan for two years for harassing Melbourne's Will Chambers as he went up the tunnel saw concerns over security raised by NRL HQ.

Manly has also had to provide assurances it could accommodate potential NRLW fixtures that will be played before NRL games throughout this year's finals series, which would require temporary dressing rooms being made available for female players.

It's understood that Cronulla officials were already weighing up a push to have the fixture pushed back to Sunday afternoon when informed of the drama in the wake of the Sharks' 25-8 win that ended the Wests Tigers' season and Robbie Farah's career.

As it stands the Sharks are facing a six-day turnaround to next Saturday's clash with Manly, while the rest of the NRL's finalists have seven to eight days between outings.

Captain Paul Gallen is adamant his side should get the same recovery period as the rest of the top eight, with Manly having eight days between the game and last Friday's loss to Parramatta.

"It's just common sense that we play next Sunday," Gallen said.

"A seven-day turnaround gives us every chance to prepare well, which is fair enough.

"The other teams have more than seven days. It's not trying to get an advantage it's just common sense. We're going into semi-finals.

"The other code [AFL] have a whole week off before their semi-finals so people [should] see the best rugby league. We should have a seven-day turnaround.

"It's still a knock out game, it should be played on Sunday."

The extra day's recovery could prove critical as far as John Morris's teamsheet is concerned, with Matt Moylan racing the clock to be fit due to ongoing hamstring troubles.

Morris revealed that he had just confirmed his starting 17 towards the end of captain's run on Saturday, only to turn around and see his star fullback hobbling from the training paddock clutching his hamstring.

Five-eighth Shaun Johnson also battled a quad injury throughout the week before turning in a classy performance at Leichhardt, but Gallen was not optimistic about Moylan pulling off a similar bid given how recently his latest flare up occurred.

"I don't think he'll be right next week if you ask me my gut feel," Gallen said.

"A six-day turnaround after missing today and yesterday's training session. So gut feel is I think he'd be pushing it next week."

Should we expose asbestos to our fans ?

Is that what should be done ?
Excavation testing is a geotechnical assessment done by boring holes up to 2-3m deep. If any asbestos is present it wont be on the surface as they would have you believe but safely underground. These precautions are taken before any ground excavation occurs so that contaminated dirt can be safely dug and discarded .. this has nothing to do with fking safety as they are twisting the facts. No asbestos would stay present on the surface especially on a high traffic area like the hill so stoopid and ignorant of them to suggest this

Fair enough if asbestos if there and the game must be moved if it is unable to be cleaned up but why would you move it to Parramatta for two teams that are on the coast If anywhere you would take it to the SCG.
Hopefully, it is all sorted and the game is played at home.

That is fine then . The Council report should clear this issue

Disgusting grubs will stop at nothing to cheat us out if our home semi. They know that it is far more convenient and cost effective to broadcast two games in consecutive days at Banjwest. It’s not about asbestos it’s about money. Crooks!
