Never used them but for accommodation overseas I have used Agoda quite a few times. Never had a problem and always saved money on quoted rates and deals directly through the hotel itself.

Interesting - so the savvy ( yes i am calling you lads savvy) use it to price match

They are a American Company, have to have a Travel Agents Licence (like me) and certainly are big over there...just starting here in Australia.

It's no drama's Isz....we don't compete in that market, our markets are specialist group tours, sporting events, horse racing tours and I do a fair bit of individual stuff for people that want "old fashioned service"....because regardless of what anyone says the Internet isnt right 100% of the time, and in my game haveing been there and done that means a hell of a lot.

It is an interesting company - not too sure about them but having a few chats re their marketing

Apart from Webjet most of the online marketers are struggling.

There isn't a lot of difference (airfares wise) between Expedia and what I would offer...however it's the airlines that are sometimes not playing ball with us these days...ie giving us a set of fares (all travel agents work from the same base) but then loading fares on that we don't have access to. It's not as prolific as it once was but some still do it...I had one recently where a Silvertails member asked me to do some travel for him and he was off to Thailand (no not Cambo)...he had checked Webjet / Expedia and my fare was the same so I made some bookings and we were right to go, he then e-mails me to say he'd found a fare $200 cheaper direct on Thai....when you consider the fare was under $1000 anyway a $200 discount was massive...I said go and buy the bloody thing direct off them (which he did).

When you think that all Thai did was cut out $35.00 in travel agents commision by dealing direct with the client  it's not very sensible to lose $165 to do it BUT as I say they can be crazy bastards at times.

Interesting - I am not sure that it is a challenge worth taking up at the moment!

I've found the difference is if you get stuck you try to ring these companies and you dont get far.

We were in Thailand in 07 and got a call from the airline saying our flight had been cancelled.....that was it, no more info, so we didnt know how to get from Chiang Mai to Koh Samui, 1 phone call to our agent back here in Oz and she sorted it out and all was sweet.

Sometimes you really do get what you pay for. Domestic travel i wouldnt bother with an agent, but in unfamiliar territory I dont think its worth the risk.

Exactly Fro......just ask the thousands who were stuck in Europe last year with the Iceland Volcano.....booked online or direct through the airline.....they were ****ed.....booked through an agent and they were updated and the agent worked their arses off to get them home.

I booked some people,

London-Paris ....Eurostar

Paris -Rome...Train

Rome-Istanbul...plane (they were flying)

Istanbul home via Dubai with Emirates

Cost them a motza BUT they got home.....that's what a good agent will do.....Expedia / Webjet / Zuji.....if you booked through them you werer rooted!!

I'm trying to work out who you're referring too :)

So Mark, I have to buy tickets for a work trip to Canada in their summer.  How would you suggest I do it?

Send me an e-mail, with dates and who is going....let me search for flights for you...no more expensive than just doing in online.

Some of the other price comparison sites that I tend to check before deciding on any fare are -
au.skyscanner.com
matrix.itasoftware.com
zuji.com.au
adioso.com

I'd also like to add that it's always wise to get a quote from a professional and highly competent travel agent, like Mark Tramby, as they do often have access to the same fares you see online.
