Not much has been mentioned about Aloiai in the pre season build up. If he's shaken of his lingering shoulder/leg injuries he could really turn back the clock to his first season with us.

His looking lean

Whatever one thinks of the Talau signing, I think suggesting cutting him before he has played a game is a bit on the nose.

The words surplus to requirements come to mind, particularly when a club has needs in other areas (no specialist Hooker, no 2024 type specialist lock, and a distinct lack of quality in the forwards).

If you consider say:

02. Jason Saab
03. Tolu Koula
04. Reuben Garrick
05. Jaxson Paulo

then include, Christian Tuipulotu, Brad Parker, Ray Vaega, Clayton Faulalo on TOP of Tommy Talau - how much depth DOES a club need in the centres?

So it may be on the nose, but it's also analytical thinking, particularly when thinking about balancing a very unbalanced clubs salary cap.

If you are talking 2025 and beyond by all means, got for it.

But we have 3 hookers in our top 30 for 2024 and there are no viable options on the market for this year.

Talau is a depth ctw at a depth price, signing him then releasing him before a game doesnt balance the cap in my view, it warps it. Basically lets see how he goes.

In regards to your other depth ctws mentioned. Tuipulotu could be out the door, Parker is transitioning to the forwards, Faulalo hasn't played a game of firsts yet and Veaga....well Veaga aint very good IMO.

STAR’S EARLY EXIT RUMOURS ‘JUST BS’

Manly boss Tony Mestrov has shot down the suggestion Josh Schuster is being shopped around to rival clubs.

Schuster signed an extension until the end of 2027 in June of last year.

“Let me be very clear, Josh has not been shopped around. That’s just BS,” Mestrov said.

“He’s expected to play in the Roosters trial and Josh has had the best off season he’s had for a long time.

“He’s still working harder than ever in the gym and in terms of his cardio fitness.

“Sure he’s had some injury challenges and he can’t do ball work at the moment because of his finger.

“Yes he also had chickenpox.

“But from a club point of view we think it’s been totally been misconstrued with this suggestion that he hasn’t been training hard.

“And we’re certainly not shopping him anywhere.”

The Sea Eagles have also heard the suggestions one particular club has been asking questions about long-time captain Daly Cherry-Evans.

DCE, who turns 35 on February 20, signed a two-year extension last year until the end of 2025.

Given the condition the Manly captain keeps himself in it’s no surprise opposition teams are still monitoring the Queensland and Australian no.7.
