Funny, cleaning up an old computer last nite which is about to kark it and I came across something I'd written way back in June 2010.

Not sure if I posted it at the time (and everyone feel free to ignore) 🙂 but it did make me think of one or two characters here 🙂
.........

Will I be happy? Will I be rich?

I sat last week watching Manly battle the Bunnies. Fearing the worst, daring to hope but not expecting any joy, actually suffering with the tension of the situation - and then suddenly relieved after that great finish. It occurred to me to ask myself some questions about my lot as a fan of the mighty Manly Sea Eagles NRL team..

What do I get out of this? What do I expect out of this? What do I want out of this?

Answering the last first, I want Manly to win of course! But obviously they won’t – not every week anyway! Apart from being by far the best club, Manly is actually one of the most consistently successful of all clubs. Of current NRL clubs only Brisbane and (the fairly new and extremely dishonest) Melbourne Storm have slightly better all-time win/loss records.

My expectation? It is very high. I expect us to be in with a genuine shot every week, including through the finals. My expectation for this week’s game against Penrith was slightly lower. I thought we would be right in it and actually win the game. Or that’s what I thought I thought. In reality I knew we were outsiders and I hoped to win rather than expected to win.

What do I get? I get entertainment. I get emotional involvement. I get some vicarious self-esteem by association with the team’s success. In addition, in recent years, having discovered the official fan forum (and later this excellent Silvertails site) I get a lot of on-line conversational fun and information about our team and all things under the sun. I also got a significant sense of belonging by signing up as a member of the Sea Eagles, although aware of the limited nature of that membership.

I am sometimes very critical of the club’s officials, but rarely if ever critical of the players. They are not all champions, but so far as I can tell they are all doing their best playing a very difficult sport at a very high level. I am sometimes amused by fans who rip in to the guys. Do you believe we should win every game by 40 nil? Every team has some players who are at the lower end of the ability scale, compared with each other. They might be the players who get the last bench spot, or who only occasionally get picked. Or maybe even the players who hold down a starting berth, but who will never be a rep star.

Do we seriously expect every member of our squad to be an out-and-out champion? And also those reserves who end up coming in to cover for our long term injured, do we expect they have to be champions too?

Even if they are, sometimes champions have lapses anyway!

My inclination is to stick up for those who become whipping boys and scapegoats for our losses, because we will always have losses and it is inherently unfair to blame those who simply are the lesser players in our squad. If they don’t try that is one thing, but I have not seen that and I have watched nearly all of our matches in recent years (though mostly on TV).

I try to enjoy the skill effort and courage of our team. Some fans seem to always be miserable or angry thinking about the shortcomings of some players or some of the team’s performances.

Nate Myles is the only player in the mighty maroon & white who never tried .

Lol, I think Foz (and maybe even Snake?) were accused by some here of not putting in a couple of times, back around 2014 2015 maybe. And maybe they didn't, who knows. They are only human I suppose.

So that's what writing looked like in the world before covid!

Lucky for you, you're happy and rich (a nice combo).

thanx for posting, interesting 🙂

we all love community groups that share common traits. This is one
at times we lose focus on the common trait is
for me its MANLY, not player x or Y , who could move on next week and spill the beans on salary cap issues or coaching.

just as poor off field culture players are disected without guilt, some feel its cool to do the same to our on field culture, others not so. thats cool

most western societies place people into demographic boxes, so we feel better of the treatment dished out because they are one of them. In oz its easy to chuck a pisshead under the bus because it affects results and he is "one of those", while swarmy types like the old storm captain are squeaky clean . weird world when you think of what we are trying to get out of the game

dans rules are the only expectations i have,

bozo was aware of his actions but we dont need to lose people like that from our community. its a sad reflection on our standards that we are forum posters set about ensuring he was settled. ( to a point , there is always 2 sides ). i just scrolled by his stuff ,

so its seems negative/positive/ angry might not matter.

ultimately the luke dornathon, the bye bye jye mullane, the willow goat fest, ben kennedy is dead threads are full of critic, and are among our most beloved memories in this joint keeping **** real. back on the old MWSE site i was pretty much like dont say anything bad about the club, maybe im just disenfranchised because i was once a member of the manly mobilisation unit

Dans rules and not a bubble of self pleasing for me, backslappers. how do we learn

it takes all types mate and i enjoy the weirdos

after the first sentence i was expecting to read that you had bought some bitcoin way back & just found it again.
still, being a manly supporter makes you rich in a different way

Yep.
I was in Albury watching Foran not put in vs the Raiders.

Then after every Raiders try, he was standing well apart from the group, kicking stones by himself.

Not an easy thing to forget, when you see a highly paid player literally stop trying in defence.

It was also Turbos debut match, if memory serves correctly.

Fabulous post mate.

It stands the test of time well, and every word continues to ring true.

I am a firm believer that as a Manly fan, the team, the club, the culture, and the proud history are all part of what we support. Not just the latest superstar player or unfortunate whipping boy. This is why i feel so stubborn in my belief around 'no di^kheads' etc.... our club and our culture matters more than our chances of winning.

SO long as we are in with a shot every week, or we are putting in, or there is hope for next years team, I will always be behind Manly (no matter how much i couldn't care less about the rest of the NRL!)

i saw the same attitude at a manly golf day around that time, as soon as he finished his round he put the phone up to his ear and walked to the furtherest point he could find from everyone. he remained there until he grabbed his gear and bolted. snake on the other hand was talking to everyone.
on a side note tom turbo was in the group behind me and after seeing him put it in the sand regularly i waited until they caught up so i could tell him 'its obvious your a manly boy'
he looked puzzled until i followed with 'because you can't stay off the beach!'
than he got it

Yes, I expect every single one, from a debut player to an Injured player or star of the game to be an out and out champion.

But then my definition of a champion, is a player that gives it all he's got and leaves everything on the field.
They are prepared to bleed for our team, be injured put their bodies on the line, whether they are skillfull, talented or not, they have my respect and they are all bloody champions some just a little less skilled than others.

Such a beautiful piece of prose, I anticipate my son will consider this text in his HSC.

I try to encapsulate that every loss with my boy - never so eloquently though. Thanks for sharing.... Yours in wins and loses and all things Manly
