Why it was a good win...

Snake

Snake's Alive!
This game was set up for Newcastle to ambush...

- Wet weather brings teams of unequal talent closer together

- Newcastle with nothing to lose

- Manly have been up for weeks against quality opposition

- Short turn around after incredibly tough game in golden point against heavy weights

- One eye on the bye before a big game against the Sharks

I thought we came out in the second half with renewed intent in defence and it was enough to get the win but we understandably took our foot off the throttle at the end and almost had our pants pulled down...

We won't play like that against quality opposition; nothing to worry about tonight. Happy to get the win and move into the top 4.

Fair points, by the standards we set ourselves it was horrible but it was always going to be tough to go up against a lower team, it seems to be one of our weaknesses trying to fire up for a no-contest.

Any win is a good win

Eeking out games like tonight when nothing seems to be going right is what can define a season. The boys now just need to put it behind them build on the week off and come out firing against the sharks.

I was happy with the first 20 minutes of the 2nd half, they played with structure and were more direct and got some reward. For the other 60 minutes, they played the wrong game plan. big passes and too many dropped balls as a result. The short turn around after a golden point game and the conditions we saw last night were always going to be a challenge. The best thing is we have already equalled our tally of wins from last season and we have 11 games left. If we can win 5 of them we are finals bound.

We flogged them.

Hey mate. I was at the game with the rest of the 4k crowd 🙂 I actually don't think you are that far wrong. We had their measure. Our ruck control, metres after impact, defense had them covered in every aspect.

The score may not have indicated it, but we just looked bigger, stronger, tougher, faster.

Those refs dead set were a disgrace I thought during the game though.

Also, tele didn't do the weather justice. It was torrential. I'm surprised there wasn't more ball errors. Our boys did well considering.

A team that wins ugly, wins comps. I left happy last night.

Hastings didn't get on did he? We need to find a way to use him in a game more
The weather last night had everything to do with Hastings staying on the bench. Players don't get as tired in the wet because the game is played at a much slower speed and their bodies don't heat up as much. Api was keeping the middle tight and the requirement for (a) fresh legs and (b) creativity around the ruck was negligible.

Manly play very Melbourne like this year (without the wrestle). Conservative but structured attack with specific strike weapons.
This is the steadiest looking Manly team in several years.

yep

with the million bucks on the sideline we have to be up so much more so it is understandable that sometimes we wont be especially against the lower teams and add rain the big evener and it was as you say good to get a win.
