Why couldn’t they pick Fainu tonight?

From my understanding the NRL wouldn't allow us to include him as he isn't in our top 30 squad and they deem us to already have 3 fit hooker options in Matt Wright, Lewis Brown and Jackson Hastings.

As I've pointed out the position of hooker is not the normal position any of those players identified as hooker. Based on the NRL logic, which is obviously to stick it to the Sea Eagles, Tom Trbojevic could play hooker. Its an absolute travesty of a decision. Just because players fill in a position out of necessity on occasions does not make them nominated for that position. The NRLs decision is flawed. Its like saying Toovey is a hooker, because he played there a couple of times. Utter disgrace of a decision. But yes Barrett blundered in not picking Fainu..and for that matter Anderson and maybe even Cust... in the 30 at the beginning of the year preferring several, at best, good reserve graders. He's got a lot to learn before one can say he is a good coach.

Because the changing of rules on the run (which they have done twice in the last few weeks) cannot happen in this instance as it would benefit Manly. It is obvious that Matt Wright is a hooker - hence him being close to a heart attack after twenty minutes of play and had to come off. Brown is obviously a hooker as he has played most of his career as a backrower who has some utility value, and Hastings is our reserve grade 5/8th hence his classification as hooker in the NRL.

Just because people have filled in at hooker at times in their career does not make them a hooker. The NRL are now classifying players positions.

Yes, Trent should have had Fainu in the 30 ahead of Jono Wright - no doubt. However, surely the NRL could exercise some common sense here.

They said as much on the Footy Show that we should have been allowed to play him and that it is not the business of the NRL to decide players positions.

It is easy to say Barrett should have had Fainu in the 30 ahead of Jono .... easy .... all it would have taken is to increase Fainu's contract amount above Jono's .... hold on .... money is tight and we need it for a gun 5/8 ... hold on ... Greenturd has just reduced our cap by some $350k .... hold on .... Thommo is avail from STG. ... hold on ..... GreenTurd won't register contracts ....

Hold on ..... we might want elevate Tom Wright or Suli into the squad instead ..... best wait and see how the season unfolds before making a decision ..

Hardly a massive upgrade Woodsie . Numbers and timeline don’t stack up.Development players are on about 30 k less than the top 30 minimum wage. .. and if Jono Wright ( or Funa) is on more than the minimum wage then we have far bigger problems than I thought!

30 k out of a 9mill cap for a kid with obvious talent in a position we are weak in! It’s a no brainer but it’s seems nothing is a no brainer for our mob now. And this decision was made prior to the salary cap mess..... we had just offered 800 k for Pearce.!

Nothing surprises me any more with Barrett. Not even that kicking into touch garbage. I coach 15 year olds and would hook them if they did that, let alone instruct them to do it.

So, I gather if Hastings is moved on soon then Manly can upgrade Fainu's contract and bring him into the 30?
Wouldn't that mean we still only have 29 players on the roster?

and had Greenturd knock that $8ook on it's ear .... fact is we still had time and one space avail .... there was no need to rush a decision, in fact up until 3 weeks ago all was good ....

Then walks broke his face, Jorge was out, Parker was out ... and Api was only out for one week ... the need for a centre was greater .... at the time everybody was calling for and delighted to have Baz make the call and elevate Suli ...... not one of the current critics was screaming no no raise fainu instead ...

Api gets injured and we are all now experts ....

I’m not talking about upgrading him now. Season is done anyway. I’m saying he should have been in the top 30 to start with! It would have cost us 30k yet we run with Jono and Funa over a bloke with obvious talent in a position we had zero depth.Throw in the fact Api doesn’t have a kicking game. When Api got hurt is irrelevant. He could have broken his foot in week one for all Barrett knew.Dont need to be an “expert” to work that out.Its called planning for contingencies in a vital spine position.

Not sure why you bat for this bloke. You surely can’t be happy with his coaching tactics... and his roster management is just as bad.Having one f...ing kicker in a top 30 other than a bloke he was in mediation talks with prior to March which could blow up any time is beyond foolish. And he just happened to be the back up hooker as well!!Anyway we are stuck with him, he ain’t going nowhere.

Why would you use one of your few spots for an untested development player at the beginning of the year when you had coverage with Brown (previously gone ok) Hastings (to some the wonderkinder) .... there was no need to restrict future decisions .... to do so would have been counter productive ....

We had 2 kickers up until preseason started and Green pulled the act of Bastardry and refused to train ... so not a lack of planning by Baz that some wish to perpetuate .... but no problem, we can get Pearce, and did, he signed an agreement, so problem solved .... then GreenTurd jumped in and in a second act of Bastardry said he would refuse to register the contract until the cap issues were clearer ...
so Not a lack of effort to solve the problem by Baz .... but let's not discourage the Baz baggers ...

mate ...criticism of a coach is often warranted ... non of them are perfect, and in any given week the best of them would only get 7/10 decisions right .... it gets tedious however when the bloke is blamed for the pies being cold in every post ....

He recently went to the board to insist that he gets a specialist roster/recruitment manager like his contract calls for ..... one would think good on him .... but no .... he gets backed for it .....
