Because when he’s firing on 8 cylinders , we are a top 4 team , when he’s not , verge of the 8, or sneak into a lower position.
The Tommy Turbo Top 4 Scenario has been for years at Manly
For years we have had time to reevaluate a playing style to counteract the Tommy Top 4 Scenario
For Years All coaches have not been Innovative to come up with winning solutions

Snake was the "Prince". A genius and I dont care what anyone says he was never 2nd to the grub from the Storm. Even the Storm knew they couldnt contain him in the 2007 GF, one day someone will admit their tactic to "take him out of the game".

No one will ever admit to 2007. Its like Terry Lamb taking out Ellery Hanley in 1988. Neither Lamb nor Phil Gould will ever admit he was taken out deliberately.

Snake was always a better player than Slater, its just that Slater has the representative runs on the board, especially being an integral part of that Qld "Dynasty".

Although Snake got taken out during the 2007 GF, he still got picked ahead of Slater for the Wellington test, which somehow and tragically turned out to be his only game for Australia. For some reason Slater got picked ahead of him for the Centenary Test at the SCG and other than apparently being picked as the No.1 fullback for the 2008 World Cup before having to withdraw through injury, he never truly got another look in.

Snake did get picked for the 2011 Four Nations squad after our GF win, and with Slater's shoulder injury during that tournament he could have grabbed his chance. But ironically as it turned out, he had to withdraw before the tournament with....a shoulder injury.

Both Great players in their own right
Slater was a Great Fullback
On his Day the Snake was as good as any one and in any era

I know his scans have come back clear, but the fact that we're paying him over a million per season and only getting about half a season out of him most years has really gone beyond a joke.

We need him on the field, not off it constantly injured. I hate suggesting moving him to the centres because I do think we need his skill at fullback. But we also can't afford to have him off the field and maybe fullback is just too much for his body.

You really think he would get injured less playing centre? There is a lot more defence.
You don't pay anyone $1 million to pkay centre.
Turbo has proved over and over he is our best fullback and in the top 3 of the game.

When fit he's our fullback every day of the week. No way playing him at centre.
The question will be how much he plays these next 2 years before his contract is up end 2026. He gets 2 full seasons in or near enough then he goes again. If he only plays say 20 or less out of the next 55-60 games including finals both years then no way paying him $1mil+. We don't decide to re sign him till mid 2026 at earliest.

Part of the reason we lost on Friday was because we didn't respect the Warriors, errors leading to poor position, not getting into the arm wrestle, etc.

What message would it send to the Raiders if we rested our best player against them?

They would be absolutely filthy, and ready to tear in. Ricky relies on that "us vs them" mentality, especially as they're already strong outsiders this week. It would send the message - again, that we don't respect the opposition enough.
They sure as hell won’t start strong outsiders next week that’s for sure.

Problem will be that the f*cking NRL will find a way to screw us by making him take up as much salary cap as possible…

He already tried to take a haircut based on games played and the NRL denied him… a team like the dogs or titans will be willing to throw cash at him, injured or not (which will inflate his market value)

If he is true to his word, he will sign his next contract for 800k and Jake for 450k.

They have the Ben Hunt contract to go off now, from 1 million a season to 600K a season, the precedent is set.

On that I do agree, he won't hide from injury in the centres. Hell, it was injury while playing in the centres for NSW that killed his 2023 season.

Its really six of one, half a dozen of the other isn't it.

Yes, we're a better team with Tom at fullback (usually). But is all the running he does at fullback good for his hammies?? He's not worth squat sitting on the sidelines injured.

Snake was the better player of the two IMO. A better defender, faster (pre-knees/hamstrings) and easily as skillful.

But the numbers largely favour Slater unfortunately. He won far more at Origin level (in that era, NSW didn't win squat) and played 29 more Tests.

They were both great players. I'm not trying to play down how good Slater was because the truth is he'll long be regarded by many as the best fullback ever to play rugby league. And he was a great player. But one on one, I think Snake was better.

It’s sad , but Tom will never get to be remembered as Manly’s greatest fullback , despite his two knee reconstructions Snakie is streets in front. And Wombat ( a different era I know ) heads and shoulders above them all.

I also believe the brothers won’t get to taste the ultimate victory they so richly deserve , and much of this as a result of Tommy.

Because when he’s firing on 8 cylinders , we are a top 4 team , when he’s not , verge of the 8, or sneak into a lower position.
Turbo is the best fullback and one of the best players in the competition. Unfortunately he is too injury prone and Jake is getting worse and worse. Burbo has never been good. Snake was my favourite player along with Matai. Glenn Stewart was also a freak, jake isn't close to him.

I think Snake was a more freakish and clever player than Slater. He could do anything on a football field. Slater had his own injury concerns but seemed capable of coming back from them better than Snake, who slowed down considerably.

Both were great competitors, but I think Slater was more physical. It’s hard to split them.

Snake also changed the way he played after those 2 ops. He evolved into more of a ball player setting up the boys more then running himself. I remember him running the length of the field many a time. The way hos head went back zoooooooooooom try time shut the gates lol

Tommy DCE cleared of serious injury 🫠🫠🫠

Slater was better at kick returns, karate kicks, brain explosions and high tackles. Slater also worked up very good combinations with Smith & Cronk and played almost his entire career with a top 4 side.
Snake was a unique talent and overall a better player, by a small margin*.

*my opinion

Imo Snake was clearly the better player early in their careers. Snake had instinct that couldn't be taught.
Snake was godlike player with perfect hands and the almost magical ability to be in the right place to either score a try or set up a try.

Slater was just as fast and probably trained harder than Snake.

Unfortunately after Snake had his two serious knee injuries, he was nowhere near the same player again - still good but not the same.

Slater had some injuries, but not shoulder injuries, not knee problems.
Slater was able to run just as fast and improved every aspect of his game thru hard work all the way till he retired.

Yes, the pre-knee injury Snake was a sight to behold. He used his guile to prolong what was a wonderful career. He was such a heads--up guy...one of my favourite moments was the try he laid on for Matt Ballin against Souths in the 2013 Prelim Final. He stood at dummy half and waved Ballin into position with his hand behind his back. Then he took a short side and held the ball up beautifully for Ballin to take the hole. It was sublime football.

It's also worth noting that in spite of his knee injuries, he was still fast enough to score an absolute pearler in the 2011 GF, running off an inside pass for DCE. He was always able to bring his best form to big games because he was a super competitor.
