Just read the fullback story on the NRL site, good read, interesting to see Brendan Elliots name in the list and Tries saved per game had led the way.
Also Brad Arthur’s view on the FB position.
But the most powerful part was slater’s comments at the end of the article.
worth reading!
A lot on here won't like the stats.

Our run in 2019 without Turbo was bookended by Elliot. Sure not an attacking genius but obviously a pretty good defensive option.

So many calling for Him yk be sent packing would probably welcome him back right now I would guess.

The article in question highlights why we have leaked so many points over the last 11 matches. FB is the glue that holds the defence together.

If and When Tom get sback and fit I guarantee we will at least halve the amount of points being put on us.

if that happens surely some decisions have to be made, by the way @Mark from Brisbane you just put the mockers on him. Everyone can blame Mark when it happens
Ironically, we were saying the exact same thing two hamstring injuries back, let alone this most recent one. He just keeps getting injured and we just keep saying next time. Sad state for everyone.

Oh yes - he was bloody dependable - he always gave his all and was a great fill in wherever he played. He might not have been a super attacker but he was all effort - few mistakes and totally dependable. Yet again the fools on here who sledged him... have absolutely no idea! And boy could we do with him now and boy could we do with someone who is all effort and heart!

I never understood the criticism of Elliot. He was only ever a backup and mostly did his job admirably. I know he got injured and likely wouldn’t be here now but I’d have him at fb every day ahead of Walker. Obviously not the greatest attacking option but could still cross the chalk.

Tge try save stats are not surprising.

Very sadly it’s MORE likely to happen than LESS likely.

Mock or no mock.

I have grave fears for our Tommy, but that’s just a gut feel not any knowledge.
Reminds me of Johnny Gibbs. Game breaker and one of those brilliant players who could turn a game in an instant and often did (remember one astonishing game at North Sydney Oval, when a nearby Norths fan near me said they had that game won, but for Gibbs. Suddenly he just exploded and Manly scored a couple of tries off his runs out of nowhere). But ongoing injury just when his career was reaching International level and he was gone two years later. Gosh I hope this is not deja vu.

agree totally - a wholehearted player and we need them now... badly!

I have no idea why we let him go. We got to the semis in 2019 with him as fullback.

I think the issue was that we had a backline that was at best serviceable, but wasnt going to win you games. The expression I used back then was 'pedestrian' in the sense that many of the backline were safe, like Elliott, could be relied on defensively, but were too slow overall to make an impact on the game.

Without Turbo and Walker (especially when taken out of the centre position), we had no impact in the backline. The best impact player other than DCE was in fact Taufua, though he had difficulties with the high ball and any speedy opposite.

That situation has become worse actually since Ellioot left because he was safe and since then, no one seems able to offer us security in the full back position. And the Suli-Parker centre partnership in my mind is unbalanced and ineffective. This is especially exacerbated by a 5/8 crisis over recent years and its little wonder DCE's play looks panicky. He knows there's nothing there to turn a game.

As Bozo rightly pushes, speed is essential, and its seriously lacking in the Manly backline still. Foran adds clever play but he is also slow. The backline needs a revamping with some more speed and creativity. Elliott with several speedy players around him, may have in that case been more than serviceable.

My only gripe is that we seemed surprised with these results knowingly not having a proper back up fb and hooker option.
We needed specialists not part timers!

But also agree all is not lost just yet! Hopeful we have a good back half of season!

I know Des likes to play ducks & drakes but him saying Harper & Garrick had trained all pre-season as back up fullbacks when Tom's injury was announced, then playing Harper at fb & Walker at centre in the trial, only to play Walker at fb in every game since - I dont see the point in any of it, from what Des' said to what he's doing?
