These players NEED to play

There is some serious talent not getting a shot due to no NSW Cup, but it's only the Manly players that concern me.
I really feel there's an opportunity to keep them match fit and even give them experience.
I know it's getting on in the season, but players not getting a run are surely chomping at the bit to show what they offer and are concerned of zero opportunity in 2020 ??
Here is a list of a few who need to play in 2020, to keep them motivated and also stop them being poached by rival clubs who will offer opportunities currently not available.
The NZ Warriors are desperate for players and I would love to see them still contracted to Manly, but fill in with Warriors, with the availability for recall IF -
  • There are injuries to Manly players, recall is available
  • If they are playing Super footy and Des feels they warrant selection - (in this case maybe offer another NSW Cup substitute who would be happier than sitting on sidelines.
Anyway here is the list I would offer over and I think due to EXTREME circumstances the NRL would likely grant this action, with the options to return to Manly at ANY time due to the above.

Olaku'Atu - If you talk X factor he has it in big defensive hits and Super attacking weapon - not sure what's happened to him
Sipley - The closest player to AFB and Kapow in that big scary body pushing forward....maybe some old injuries still around
Schuster - A perfect impact who could play multiple positions - maybe a season off , but must be damn close
Hoppa JNR - Apparently strong as any in the NRL squad so physically capable, serious injuries may still concern staff
Saddler - Similar in style to a young Klemmer, could be a genuine firebrand every team loves beside them.

What's the thoughts ??

They are having the odd ‘scrimmage’ game against other clubs I believe. Not sure how often but agree it is an issue that no NSW Cup competition is available for them to either get match fitness or develop their game

Olaku"Atu has been regularly there abouts in the extended squad on game days so would be pretty close to a call up presumably . Waddell is a reliable competitor and probably if Olaku " Atu had some reserve grade games to impress in , maybe even edging him out at this stage Same might apply to Jet Ski as well . Similarly hard for Sipley to also get his opportunity Saddler is probably a year off to make his mark . Schuster must be close and young Hoppa for that matter but this type of a season will continue to have it"s limitations for prospective up and comers to get their shot , next season will hopefully be an entirely different scenario .

A couple of weeks ago I emailed the club with a suggestion they do a piece on how these players were training and remaining motivated. It is something I'm sure every Manly fan would like to see and hear. It is also newsworthy.
I did not receive an acknowledgement of the email but I hope my suggestion is being considered.
Let's face it: hearing three players each week stating how much they are looking forward to the next clash is no longer newsworthy imo. But having a look behind the scenes at the players on the fringe of selection -- such as watching them train -- is.

Agree with you in principle Maxta ... but think we would be better served rotating our bench players ourselves .... come crunch time I would hate to have to use a couple of blokes who haven't played all year ... Saddler, Sipley and Guacomole should be getting at least one game in three ...

Also get the point with Schuster and Hoppa ... but would be reticent to let them out of sight of Brookie without a chaperone and body double .... plus Shuster must be getting close to a gig ..

I heard Payton in an interview the other day saying they were after players with some NRL experience (50 plus games) but clubs kept offering them rookies.

So they may not be interested in Haumole, Schuster, Hoppa and Saddler

Hey Woodsie - 100%...the rotation is the ideal situation, but appears a few goodens arn't getting the opportunity atm and maybe won't ?

Seems a fair call too, early on was hearing the names like Slater and Gallen which never really got off the ground...since then the Warriors have used a fair few rookies with zero experience to help make the numbers, some not as highly rated as some of the Manly boys and done ok.

I'm reluctant to let them play elsewhere, would prefer a NSW cup to get started.

I really don't understand why NSW Cup could not have gotten a start albeit with a shortened season.

No travel expenses and these guys have just been training with nothing to train for.

And that lack of match fitness means pitch forking them into NRL raises some duty of care issues.

Maybe the club is not mentioning these guys in an attempt to keep them below other clubs' radars. Maybe.

I heard Brandy talking about this last night on Fox. He reckons that the training they do these days is very close to playing in a game situation . I usually believe everything that comes out of brandys mouth, but this may be stretching it. For sure the training has picked up plenty, but with these new rules, the speed of the ruck would catch out even the fittest trainer. No substitute for the real thing. Bloody Storm got the best deal, with Harry Grant at the tigers for the year.

Sipley isnt even close to afB and taupau. I dont see what you all see in him. He's slow and makes no impact. Probably why he hasn't been seen again...

Guacamole id like to see have a crack

Schuster and hoppa. You all rave about these kids so id like to see them play. At the expense of who i dont know.. will only happen through lots of injuries id imagine

For those (yes I suspect there may be one or two) stressed at the delay in seeing our young up and comers featuring in NRL...

Newsflash!!

Now its official:

"We are not rushing anybody," Hasler said.

I'm totally with you Maxta. Some of our young players are copping the consequences of not being able to play to reveal their skills. Despite Des saying he doesnt want them rushed, I think this Covid issue is retarding their development. If Des is not going to play them, let them play on a loan arrangement with another less fortunate club on a game by game basis, like the Warriors and come back when needed. Its an ideal way to show what skills they have at first grade level. Otherwise they are being wasted and if I was a young player wanting to show my wares, I'd jump at the chance of playing only temporarily at another club. It would get them experience and reveal to the club, with which they are contracted, the skills they have and their worth in the top grade. Excellent thought Maxta. Thing is its a win win for our club.

I reckon Sipley is good, noone has him up with AFB or Kapow, but does need footy to be useful if needed
I personally feel Paseka has improved more than given credit and deserves his spot, but Sipley becomes invalid and unfit making him zero option if called due to no footy- which is the basis of the thread....the others if proven at NRL level, even at another club, could well make a strong case for Des to think they are good enough to play there way into the side, injuries or not.
