Don’t know if anyone was listening to ABC Grandstand radio on Saturday arvo , I don’t usually listen regularly but was driving my grandkids to the border after they had a week with us for school holidays ( before you ask they live just over the border so are part of the bubble ) to return them to our daughter.
Anyway the issue of the “ wrestle “ came up and Luke Lewis jumps on and says “ look players are trained to slow down the PTB area but no one is trained to hurt or maim an opposition player “ ( note this was after a caller rang in critical of the injuries caused by these tackles in 2020).
This was debated for a few minutes and they moved on to something else but shortly later another caller came on saying he was involved in the martial arts industry and has a black belt in this and a blue belt in that and said “ Luke you’re a good bloke and all but that’s a lot of ****”.
He went on to say that each and every move ( chicken wing , crusher etc ) IS specifically designed to stop movement and with the nature of the game the players AND coaches know this WILL cause injury!
He obviously had a security guard background as well and said this is stuff they train for to injure an attacker when the going gets tough.
He went in to say that all teams use it but ( and no surprise ) the Melbourne Storm’s whole defensive plan is based around these moves , he see’s it EVERY tackle they make.
The ABC team really wanted to end this conversation ( and eventually did ) but he really got his message across.
Don’t know if anyone else heard it but I found it bloody interesting.
