Journey Man
With all the debate etc. over the past few weeks / months, it got me to thinking, in a perfect world, what would I like to make me feel all warm and fuzzy as a fan going forward. With that in mind, and with a "broader" group of fans now posting here, I'd love to see and/or hear what you guys would like in a perfect world from this team in the next 18 months (long, or short - it doesn't matter).

For me: (apologies for the length here, but I will try and highlight the subjects so you can avoid the ones you don't want to know about.)

Andrew Johns / Cliffy Lyons : Now that Parramatta are done with Andrew Johns, and with our 1/2's pairing potentially being very inexperienced, I'd LOVE Manly to grab at the chance of attaining Andrew Johns services more frequently. I realise he already does SOME work, but more would be fantastic (and hopefully doesn't cost us too much). I'd also love (time / work etc permitting) for Cliffy to do some one on one stuff with Keiran Foran;

Donny Singe : In my opinion, we started looking pretty fit in 2007. Towards the end, our defense at the back end of games were improving. There was also a sprinkle at the start of the season where you'd look at a player, and think, "damn, XYZ looks fit AS". 2008, we came out like a machine (and looking like one fitness wise). Since that period, we have appeared to be regressing in this area a little. Without being ridiculous this off season, I'd love to see our playing group come back MUCH leaner, more mobile, and with more constitution;

Injuries : Ok, we have now had our share of injuries (especially season ending ones). The football gods owe us, and I'd love to see our Brett back firing on all pistons. I know there are a few that are adamant his knees are shot, but I then look at Matty Bowen, Anthony Minichello, George Rose and players like that, and think he may have a good chance (yep, I'll be glass 1/2 FULL with this one :));

Graham Lowe : Ok, he's made some moves that are positive for Manly. I'd like to see some great results produced. I believe he is working on that Centrebet sponsorship, and hopefully that pays dividends (so to speak). I hope he CAN land us that PNG game, and we get circa $1,000,000 for it. I'd love to see us land a surprise signing either this year, or next, so that opposition teams know that we are still around, and doing what we need to roster wise to attain a premiership....BUT, I have to admit, I "LOVED" it when Lowe mentioned we will look WITHIN for a 1/2's solution - that breeds a wonderful culture imo, and could be a thread on its own. I'd also LOVE Lowe to improve the general communication from the "club" to the various outlets (players, fans, sponsors, media etc) - note I did NOT say just Lowe here.

Crowd Sizes & Membership Numbers
: I really, REALLY hope that the club provides a "compelling reason to buy". I really hope they (and I have been told umpteen times that this is not a business, it's a sports club) make fans & sponsors alike feel as though we / they are part of the family. Part of the community - and that is something in my opinion, the club has gone away from over the past 18 months. BUT, this can be easily rectified. The Sea Eagles are an attractive brand - and a lot of people / business / franchises want to be associated with us;

Brookvale Oval : I don't care WHO wins in government ( they are all the same to me - sorry Dave), but there needs to be a continued effort (with support from us the fans) for the acquisition of funding for our beloved Brooky. I know there is a lot being done behind the scenes from the club with this - so I'm not complaining, but I'm talking taking a leaf out of Wheels book, who is one person, yet making his voice be wonderfully heard none the less. I personally commit to do my part, and write to the powers that be (again), and also be involved in healthy6 debate etc.

Interaction : This is more about me personally, but I'd love to get out there, and meet more of the fans (probably next season, as my boy has just started liking footy, and I can drag him along now!). I'd like to go on an away trip (maybe start with Melbourne on a Mark trip), so I can hook up with Douggie and co. I also reckon with the old website being shut down, it may bring a lot of the different (groups I will call it) together. Hopefully a lot of bridges are mended.

Leagues Club : As a local resident, I'd love to see the renovation of the Leagues started and finalised. I'd love a place you could go, and stomach a feed. A place to be very proud of after a game.

Memberships : I say this as a simple supporter, but I'd LOVE for all memberships to be built into one package if possible. I realise this may not be an option for new members, but what about someone like me, that just wants to simply renew them all. I'd love to just tick a box on the Internet, and I'm renewed (maybe even on a three year option for example) in all of The football club, The Leagues Club, and my season ticket etc...

The High Ball : Melbourne Storm work very closely with an AFL team, with a value add for both franchises. The AFL team get the benefit of tackling technique, and the Storm get much needed, and put to practice technique under the high ball. I'd love to see us work with The Swans. Heck, Adam Scheider's brother, Leigh works with me (and I know Adam now plays for St Kilda), but I'm sure I could get something organised !! Then again, Robbo is a gun under the high ball. We haven't seen it that often this season as Hodko and Foran aren't as skilled as Ox was with cross field kicks (sorry DSM5), but I'm sure if we have both Cliffy and Johns supporting Foran and Cherry-Evans, these things may come quickly, and imagine that with the added skill The Swans may impart;

The Halves : Before I start, I want to say this is NO-ONE'S fault here, but for whatever reason, I believe we MAY struggle due to injuries this year. I have no doubts some players are currently playing injured (Foran, Lyon, Matai) for example. If we per chance end up sliding to 10th, with 5 rounds to go, lets give Cherry-Evans a run;

Mobility : Much like the Donny Singe topic above, we have to be healthier. Our team is currently being targeted out wide late in games because of lack of speed in my opinion. We HAVE to get T-Rex out of the backline. He dominated in the pack at World Cup level. Wolfman / Stewie will rectify this;

Player Signings : Sometimes, player signings could be announced in a more efficient way. I don't know if Manly releases the info as soon as they happen (if at all - Ox), but like the communication, this could happen much better;

Forwards : I believe our forward pack is one of the best going around today. What I also believe, is they are extremely overweight, and unfit. I'd love to see them tone up, become faster, because their size and skill is already there. They need to bend the opposition defensive line back, and this year, that hasn't happened nearly enough. That then means our 1/2's get dominated;

Captaincy : Not a fan of the dual captaincy. Lyon is great with the media (well, he has been this year at any rate). He's our Thurston. He should be our sole captain.  He leads from the front, and for petes sake mate, have an injury free year will ya !!

Anyway guys - these are my thoughts (Oh, and a Premiership would be great), but I'd love to hear your warm, fuzzy things....

Sorry Ryan, I am sure your post is full of great things but I had to stop reading when I read two words, Andrew Johns.

The Johns brothers turn everything to **** they touch, keep him right away from our team.

I would just like to point out I was a Johns fan, read his book, and still say he is the greatest player I have seen but.....

Reading what you love was strangely inspiring, and heart warming.

What are you on Ryan?

Very thoughtful Ryan, and would love you to come on one of the MWTS trips but beware they are very addictive!!

Solid post Ryan.

I would like to see the club send their members a feedback form with set questions so the club can gauge the 'general consensus' from members, about how they perceive the club they pay to support.
Questions like, what they like/dislike, how they feel about membership, what they would like to see included in future membership ect and possible ways the club can improve in areas of communication to members and other aspects.

Sadly, until the club takes this kind of measure, they are sweeping this under the carpet and I will be forced to maintain my thought that the club is doing everything in its power to isolate their existing customer base.

That said though, the updates and info from Vid re the club, are fantastic and very much appreciated.

I like it Ryan, so much so here's my two bob on your well though out topics

Andrew Johns. On the surface i support this idea. As a player he had it all. I don't know what he is like as a coach but if he has the ability as a coach then yes. His commitment and attention to detail made him what he was. Winning competitions is not a popularity contest so if he is best credentialled and is already on the payroll get him up to the sunshine coast fast

Donny Singe. Fitness is a funny one. Going back a few years manly cruised out of the blocks and died later in the season.. Manly have document they do not want to overtrain there players to keep them fresh and to allow them to peak at the right end of the season.I support this theory 100% as the winning teams charge generally comes later in the season. Manly haven't lost fitness since 2008, they have lost the hunger. 2 different things in my opinion. A number of manlys forwards in particular Perry, kite, king and choc look much leaner to me. Rose is understandable and Joe does look like he swallowed a sheep

Injuries, Manly have had a good trot over the last few years and i reckon there is more than just luck in this. Consistently they have used less players than most other teams and this is consistent with teams that go well.Sometimes i wonder if the reluctance to drop a player has something to do with this though. Des is obviously a loyal man , but in his time has a player ever been dropped for poor form. Doubtful and this i reckon contributes to the lack of hunger at the club.

Graham Lowe. don't know much yet and its too early to tell. Cant really comment. The only question i have about sponsorship is why did qantum not take up a 3rd year option. If its because they don't want to be involved in footy or have changed focus, then that's life. If the negative publicity received last year or they didn't feel the love that's another, that needs to be addressed in house

Crowds. its easy for me to say as i live in Qld, but its time for Manly fans to put up or shut up. Manly need to be upfront with there fans and say crowds suck, we love brookie but if we cant average 18 or 20k at brookie then we are off to greener pastures, 2 games , 6 games , 10 games a year. Give the fans some warning though as we can all feel something coming. This could potentially divide Manly with there fans, and yes I am well aware of the power the FC holds but money is money

Membership. I feel membership is an untapped part of rugby league and more needs to be done here for sure. Some by manly but more by supporters. We all know what we should do. Why many don't is a question they only know. It would be a shame if Manly attracted less members in 2011

High Ball. It is important for sure, and any specialist coaching should be embraced as its both an attacking and defensive ploy. Having an A F L player around couldn't hurt the kicking game either so its all a plus

Mobility. Manlys emphasis on props seems a bit too much for me. Love how many props we have, just don't like how many make the top 17. Playing Bailey out wide when injuries crop up doesn't help. T Rex is a man mountain and a great player but he is not a winger. Manly have invested too heavily in big men and have paid the price

Forwards. Manly have great forwards i agree if the salary cap was 6 million. Not enough balance in the team. Its great when we get injuries in the forwards but not in the backs. Its easier to bring in a young forward that a young back. Its lonely out there

Signings. This is where the club could offer extras to there members without doing much at all. They should be informed first. It doesn't help though when members post there stuff on other sites like this one. Some people love to think they have a scoop. But members not being informed on major signings is just slack

Captaincy. I like the dual captains. For mine both kingy and Jamie's game has improved as a result. It takes away some pressure  as well. Sometimes you just have to go with what you have. There is no Ben Kennedy in this squad

Coach, Ill add this one myself. Des has done a tremendous job, 2 Gf for 1 win, finals appearances, but there is still room for improvement. I'm no coach , have no info so i wont embarrass myself trying to tell him what to do, but he needs an image overhaul for the good of the club. His gruff abrasive nature is Des and its what makes him the coach he is but this is 2010 Des, Where have you been, Des, where have you been . Its not a good look for the club, sponsors or the media. Get someone else to conduct interviews and post match conferences please. He doesn't want to be there anyway. He is a very respectful man in the few chats i have had with him. I'm not bagging him, he is a coach , just not good PR

Manly are not going to win every game or every comp. We all know that. Sometimes is OK to say the other team did things better. Its how we learn. Sometimes we all need to say we made mistakes, its part of the process. Its a very unforgiving game footy at all levels. Football is full of cliches, one of the biggest is "we just have to concentrate on our own game, do what we do and not worry about the other team "Never a truer word spoken. Its why I struggle with the secrecy around manlys squad every week.If the coach feels he needs tricks, then that must rub off on the players. Its very Brian Smith and he had this funny thing about wingers, everyone was a winger except the wingers. T Rex anyone

PS. The PNG thing sounds great on paper and its hard to refuse. The club needs cash , i understand that. PNG will use this game as a platform for NRL entry. I love there ideae of putting RL in the schools and forcing the kids to go to school if they want to play. Its about educating there people. Its a novel idea BUT

Its not going to happen, there will not be a PNG team in the next 20 years so this is effectively a waste of money by the PNG govt. A  massive wank. With the average lifespan so low in PNG, AIDS out of control this is money that shouldnt go to a footy team. Its bad karma, its blood money and i could never do it.

Not unless Manly are going to offer massive ammounts of extras like a commitment to play trials there for the next 10 years, Players building villages in the off season like parra do, donations of sporting equiptment and facilities and help introduce an education system etc etc etc. Its just me, i dont expect everyone to agree with it and thats fine

This isnt homebush

Re Quantum, this is a company owned by the Penns, same as Mack Trucks.  Quantum had some not so great media coverage last year which may have dinted the cash reserves as well as I don't think the Penns are real happy campers at the moment so you can't blame them for not wanting to tip more money into the club.

Action??

I have been married 35 years, and am 55.....I can just remember "action"....is that something you do with your hand???

Good insight Kate....It will be tough getting a big name sponsor, and getting big dollars....this is a difficult financial time (still and depsite Kevies 42 Billion Giveaway), so the SE are really going to need some luck on their side....a Grand Final win would help!!

Thank you Kate. I actually had no idea of the sponsors/owners relationship.

Wondering if this will have a 'short term' impact on the clubs ability to spend the entire salary cap on players?

???? Mack trucks are a wholly owned subsiduary of Renault (since 1990) - Quantum - Quantum Energy Technologies is a wholly owned subsidiary of Quantum Energy Limited, an Australian publicly listed company with proprietary patented hot water heat pump technology (from their website)

I am sure I read an article a while back that said the Penns where heavily tied to those two companies.  I may be wrong - it has happened before

I thought i read that Mack pulled out of their sponsorship as the company decided not to sponsor any teams/sports anymore.
