The games partners

I can not begin to describe how cringeworthy it sounds when the almighty arseberger talk about the networks that purchase the NRL product as partners of the game. Every time i hear this term my bum hole tries retreat within me.

They are not partners of the game. There agenda is certainly at odds with the growth of the game. They purchase footy for commercial reasons and bastardise the game for there finacial gain. I have no problem with that, but to insinuate they are partners in this , is very worrying for me, and makes me wonder if there is something untoward within these relationships

The networks promote the product they purchase, but are not interested in any growth unless we talk in terms of dollars for themselves. They will not be counted on to contribute if anything should rock the league as a partner would and will walk away at any time if the sums dont add up. In fact other arms of a network seem hell bent to destroy the game for there own financial gain as evident by the endless scandle reporting and mud raking that most fans are not concerned with. With partners like these who needs enemies. It seems like all parts of the game are opened up for attack and ridicule except for the few people in charge of overseeing the game and the scandles. Is this possibly the partnership that knobberger speaks so proudly of

The language used tries to elude that both parties have a unified goal to promote, foster and develop rugby league is misleading and to be honest sounds very untrustworthy. From a distance the language, the relationships and outcomes reek or personal partnership rather that a long term benefit to all things rugby league.

Rugby League needs strong leaders who put rugby league first and the networks second. They need to know where they stand and im sure they do, and this is why certain partnerships exist.

There was a certain taint in the air when gallop was top dog, that made most fans worry about all things not on the footy field. Dave smith had his shortcomings but the taint and innuenedo disappeared and the ceo was under constant attack. For a while it seemed the partnership rules had been rewritten. With dickberger in charge the foul mist has again engulged rugby league and again our partners have the time to criticise all things rugby league except for those that currently oversee it.

The games cap is growing, and there has never been more cash in the game but lets not forget that this deal was forged in steel by smith and not the current management. And lets not forget how gyngell carried on when he paid through his retreating bum hole for the rights, he didnt sound like a partner then, and the subsequent media smashing of smith was not the behaviour of what a partnership sounds like to me.

The current TV deal and maybe the next will be the biggest ever pay days the NRL sees.

Since the Quayle and Arko era Bankers and Academics have ruined a once great Aussie sport, killed it off at its grass roots level.

As they say "Make hay.........."

The current situation wont last forever.

I might start referring to my employer as my "partner". I provide time and expertise, they provide me with pay. Partners!

Superb post James!!

On the money as usual, James. And through all of this rolling in money crowds are still declining. The new professional management with their KPIs and mega head office staff can't seem to pull a crowd like they did in the era of Kevin Humphries and Quayle/Arko.
The first game I went to as an 11 y/o in 1975 was a Manly Roosters match at the SCG. It was a Saturday match and drew around 30000 people even with a tv replay later. Awash with money, staff and television deals I am not confident that the NRL could sell a heater to an eskimo. But they talk the talk and that is all that matters these days.

Yes, a highly insightful post.....

And can it not be clearer, though apparently to the 'herd' it's as clear as mud.

When you purchase a product, you then OWN it.

The rest all should be self explanatory (though it isn't) and those like Arko, with vision of what would happen must surely be shaking heads....

but let's be optimistic and look at the bright side, the status quo is great for the grifters, druggo's, gamblers and underworld slimebags, so what could possibly go wrong!

As Bob says above, it can't last forever, but the same business model has been running for a lot longer in the US than here, so don't hold your breath.

Great post mate. It's for this reason that the NRL are at a conflict of interest with regards to certain teams and players. The lack of consistency within the NRL stems from this money driven madness.

This approach will only take the game so far. Nine will give up its rights once it realises that reducing the game to a fanfare for its favourite teams isn't going to give them the long term growth in viewers that they expect. And when that day comes, the game will be better for it. I just hope that the leadership in the NRL is strong enough to keep this future in mind when making key decisions and as far as I can see, Greenberg isn't.

Great post, jbb/james. The debasement of the English language at the hands of PR knobs, marketers, HR types and other hacks continues apace. "Partners" is just one example. Don't get me started on "stakeholders"…

The NRL will whore themselves out for every dollar until they are so riddled with disease no one will want to touch them

Partners? Why don't the NRL and the media companies just go the whole hog and get married? At least that way they could throw a big party and get some pressies.
