T-Rex set for NRL extinction

Tony Williams, also known as ‘T-Rex’, has had a glittering NRL career, collecting a decade’s worth of highlights along the way. But without a contract for 2018, it seems the once feared T-Rex is set to be wiped out.

Williams debuted as a winger for Parramatta in 2008, before making the move to Manly, the best decision of his career. After spending two years on the North Shore flirting between wing and centre, Des Hasler moved Williams into the second row in 2011, the year the Sea Eagles would go on to win the premiership.

But soon after William’s maiden premiership victory, inconsistency began to set into the hulking forward’s game.

He began the next year poorly, picking up a seven-match suspension in just Round 3 after a dangerous throw charge, until his luck turned around mid-season, earning his maiden Blues jersey.

The back-rower followed his coach to Bulldogs the following year on a four-year, $2.4 million deal, though he couldn’t deliver in his stint at Belmore. After failing to have his contract extended, signing a single year deal with Cronulla. But after a single game in the Shire, Williams tore his ACL and left his NRL career hanging by a thread.

Williams most likely career move is sure to be England, with the majority of NRL club’s rosters already full ahead of next season. Having been in lacklustre form for several years and coming off the back of a serious knee injury, it appears no club is willing to run the risk

Williams isn’t the only former star without a contract for next season, with Nate Myles and Frank Pritchard yet to decide their playing future, though the latter appears certain to sign a one-year extension with Parramatta.

Veteran coaches Craig Bellamy and Wayne Bennett have built their legacy on the resurrection of former star’s careers, though even they would appear hard-pressed bringing T-Rex back from the brink of rugby league oblivion.

A season in the Super League to find the form that earned him his moniker could be just what the doctor ordered, but even then Williams would be lucky to have a fifth NRL club come knocking.

It’s hard to imagine how Williams would be remembered if he were to retire today. The winger turned back-rower won a State of Origin series, a Four Nations tournament and an NRL premiership, but failed to deliver on his massive potential.

The phrase ‘built like Tarzan, runs like Jane’ comes to mind.

Unless some sort of miracle comes around, it appears Tony Williams is in rugby league purgatory, with no end in sight.

T-Rex played his best with Manly .
Can we revive him once more ???

It takes more then just physical attributes to be a good footballer. In all jobs you can have the skills but to be good at it all the time there has to be a certain level of desire. It is "built" in. We can criticize players too often. Some would just love to be park footy players ..and be paid lots of money.

I'd give him a shot on an incentive contract.

If he plays well, we get a good buy or he is there for depth.

I'd say he jump at the chance to come back and wouldn't command much money.

It's a tragedy that someone built like he is never lived up to their true potential. I'd rather give his cap space to another youngster and give them a shot. He's had his chances. I hate to say that even if he came over I don't think he has much more to offer other than his bench warming abilities and what if factor.

Rexie came to one of our MWTS functions at the LA Hotel as special guests prior to a Donkeys game , along with Jason King ( both injured at the time).

They walked up the stairs and I went over and introduced myself and thought “ jeez you are a big unit Kingdog” and also thought “ holy **** how could anyone tackle the other big monster”.

He was gigantic.

But as we know a sheep in lions clothing.

All he had to do was pick up the ball and run hard, he was almost unstoppable at speed close to the line.

Sad really, could have been an absolute superstar of our game.

Good that Manly was able to get some decent value from T Rex occasionally and during his 4 year stint . Could not be critical of him taking the money and joining the Bull Dogs as there were enough problems with cap issues and back ended deals at Manly already at that stage . Certainly blessed with some impressive playing attributes but whether through his sometimes noted casual and lazy attitude or injuries , just could not seem to deliver much after leaving the Sea Eagles . Injury free , he should be able to do reasonably well in the English Super league

"A decade of highlights"???
You'd be hard pressed to find 20 games he had an impact in. Even in our successful 2011 campaign I'm pretty sure he was dormant for all but a handful of games towards the end of the season?
One highlight would have to be when he steamrolled straight over the top of grub Slater.

Its a shame because he was a wrecking ball . If someone could tap into his head and get what he could do back , could be a good pickup. Sadly hasler couldn't get it out of him at the dogs, and his best game funnily was at halfback against US .
