Manly coach Trent Barrett on Daly Cherry-Evans, losing senior players and while he won’t ‘coach safe’

Paul Crawley, The Daily Telegraph

TRENT Barrett has backed Daly Cherry-Evans to return to his best in 2017, admitting the retirement of club legends Jamie Lyon, Brett Stewart and Steve Matai has lifted the pressure off his star halfback.

In his most revealing interview since taking over from Geoff Toovey, the 39-year-old sat down and spoke candidly with The Daily Telegraph, about his own future, and the troubles of 2016.

I'm confident, positive and grateful TB has taken the reins of this completely new group of players. Not his fault Tooves was flicked so all we can do is back him and luv his passion to all the players by not accepting a loss. Go Manly, Cherry and all who want to make us a force in the future.

Us supporters can judge every one predict all the sht we like . At the end of the day We are 2 wins from 2 matches which includes a very impressive win against a strong rooster side . I believe we are going to have a successful 2017 baring injury .

We are zero from zero where it counts, heres hoping we go undefeated though.

You are right we are zero from zero where it counts but in the trials we looked a better balanced side than last year and that counts to me as well .
I think in 2017 we will kick ass

He may have made a teeny mistake here:
"Asked if there was any resentment, he added: “Not at all. Jamie was one that was pretty much up to him. He was playing well."
To me, this indicates Stewart and Matai were tapped on the shoulder and that works directly against the appeal to the NRL re Salary Cap exemption due to injury.

"Nate Myles, Brenton Lawrence, Cherry, Jake Trbojevic, Lewie Brown, Marty (Taupau), they are all in our leadership group .... A big part of the reason why we brought Blake Green was for his leadership and experience and his calm head."

Wow - we have seven leaders out of seventeen.
Hope we don't have a cook and broth problem ...

I don't expect to win the grand final or even make the top 8 this year. I feel we will finish around 10th but if we can sneak into the 8 surely Trent deserves a extension, I would give him one if we finish 10th.

On a positive we seem to be getting a lot of positive press this year and no leaks of the negative stuff of recent years. To me this indicates Trent is looked on favourably by Bozo and the Owners.

hopefully a case of "many hands ..."

When he says that I think he means it was up to him in that he was still at a point physically where the decision was his. His body wasn't preventing him from playing.

The others are clearly broken down to the point where there is so much accumulated damage (from some random training incident that just occurred 😉) that they can't get out there again even if mentally they are up for it.

However we may feel about him, anyone here willing Barrett to fail is wanting Manly to fail IMO.

Remember, if he fails as our coach then we aren't winning games.
I might be wrong, but I don't think I've seen anyone here willing him to fail. I've read plenty of nasty about Zorba and friends but I think TBaz has plenty of goodwill toward him. People recognise that he had nothing to do with the treatment of Tooves and that he's popular with the players and is extremely emotionally invested. Just need him to tick the Good Coach box and everyone will be Baz fans.

Yep, but that would have been the right way to say it rather than put it in terms of Jamie playing well.
That's why I said teeny mistake because I reckon being interviewed where you always had to choose your words carefully would be a nightmare.
Makes me extremely grateful to be a Nobody!

Wow, his words are picked apart syllable by syllable. Last week he was criticised for saying Manly wanted to beat the Roosters.
Pettifogging!

I like Trent - go kick some eel, bunny, cowboy, bulldog, chook, dragon, storm, raider, bronco, titan, knight, shark, warrior, panther and tiger ass!!
