Diabetes catches up with star

MANLY fullback Brett Stewart has been warned his health will have to be closely monitored to ensure diabetes doesn't constantly stall his NRL career.
Stewart is in serious doubt for tonight's blockbuster against Parramatta after making a slower-than-expected recovery from a rotator cuff injury.
The exciting fullback, who averages close to a try a game, has type one diabetes and takes longer to heal than the average person. He has to inject insulin four times a day and follows a strict diet to keep the disease under control.
"When you've got type one diabetes it can take longer to heal," said Manly physio Andre Rickenbach, who has been working on Stewart's left shoulder for the past fortnight. "It's something you need to take into account when treating and setting recovery goals."
Stewart tested his shoulder at training last night but still looked a little short of full fitness. With Manly having the bye next week, coach Des Hasler is unlikely to take any chance with his leading attacking commodity.
"We will give him every chance to play but if there is any risk of further damage he won't play," Hasler said.
"If he doesn't play (tonight) he'll be right for our next game."
If Stewart is ruled out, Michael Robertson will remain at fullback, with Paul Stephenson retaining his spot on the wing.
It's understood the Sea Eagles' tactics tonight will revolve around targeting rookie Eels winger Jarryd Hayne.
The teenage sensation has enjoyed a dream start to his NRL career, scoring nine tries in as many games.
But Manly intend directing plenty of traffic his way, with Matt Orford to lead the assault. Both teams take winning form into the Parramatta Stadium sellout, with the Eels having won five on the trot and Manly four.
* Sione Faumuina's manager, Peter Brown, last night ruled out speculation his client was negotiating with Manly.
"At this stage he's contracted (until the end of 2007) and won't be leaving the Warriors," Brown said.
