The bad news is that when he returned the pen to Sea Eagles HQ for forensic examination, they discovered that there was not quite enough ink to write 'Steve Matai'.  There was only sufficient ink to write 'Steve Mat'.

Fearing a backlash from the spelling and grammar nazis on Silvertails, the Board is presently considering the repercussions of having Matai sign the agreement as 'Steve Mat'.

This explains why Trent Hodkinson's signature was completely out of the question.
