Slow the ruck? It's six again!

“I take my hat off the Wayne Pearce. He has driven the six-again idea rather than stopping and starting with penalties around ruck infringements.

“If teams try to slow down the ruck, the opposition will get six again. Simple as that. They’ll soon learn not to slow the ruck down. The game just keeps moving.”

On the one-referee, V’landys is convinced it is the right call.

...

The decision to award six more tackles rather penalties will greatly increase game continuity while providing a disincentive for breaches that impact on the speed of the ruck.

This innovation was trialed in the All Stars game at the start of the 2012 season and received significant positive reviews.

(As long as the ref holds the storm accountable - time and time again we see an arbitrary application of the rules. eg: Can only talk to the ref at certain times. sCam strolls up talks whenever and refs allow it.)

Hope it works well with the one ref ..... but heaven help the team that gets on the wrong side of the ref .... this adds a whole new level of being able to manipulate a result ... well timed 10/11 tackle sets with no break in between will kill any team ..

PSS ... or heaven forbid in golden point coming off your own line ...

Dessie doesn't like it or the one ref.

But how great is it to see Dessie again!!!!

I can add an extra to this new play on- 6 more tackle rule.....once there is a break in play by a try, error, kick ect, if there was a serial offender penalised after numerous warnings, also gets 10 in the bin....

Bit over the constant rule changes.. does the game really need to be sped up??

It's already at the point where good, solid leg tackles are not worth trying anymore as they blow the whistle if the defender doent get up within 1.5 nano seconds.. guys like toovey and beaver would have been defensive liabilities under the current "speed up the game " agenda instead of the legendary tacklers they actually were

The focus shouldn't be on speeding up the ruck but nailing down the right amount of time for a defender to get back to marker after completing a tackle.

Wrestling in the tackle should be allowed if the player doing so is "continuously" maneuvering himself into a better position to get back to marker within a reasonable amount of time.

All you will achieve by speeding up the ruck is holes around the ruck touch football style and long distance tries starting from a boring show and go.

You might actually be better off with a legs tackle to slow down the play the ball if you change the focus to "allowing sufficient time for a defender to get back to a marker position" as it allows a sort of second mid body tackle wrestle after the tackle is completed to enable that player time to get into marker.

I don’t support this rule change. Sadly refereeing decisions at times determine game outcomes and this is just another way of ensuring a side scored on the back of multiple tackles in the red zone. The referees already has the ability to continually penalise the defending side and ultimately sin bin continual offenders. A better way to deal with it is to reduce the sin bin to 5 minutes so referees might be a little less reluctant to use it.

Maybe just make that particular tackle a “free” tackle, rather than a whole new set? Keep doing it and yeah, give the penalty, but enough seven or eight tackle sets will tell without giving a massive leg up to the team that’s being delayed all the time...

How does this actually work? So I slow down the ruck and give away "six again" does that player I tackled still play the ball? What if the play the ball indiscretion causes an error? What happens then? Is it a tap or do you give the ball back to the attacker to play the ball? If anyone knows im interested to hear the answer. In theory I dont mind the idea as it will suit an up tempo game that we play and I also like that a game wont be decided on a penalty goal for a minor indiscretion. I would much rather keep the penalty but make it a differential type penalty where they cant go for goal or kick for the sideline. Just a tap and go

I think this is a much better idea.

Maybe bring in a 5 min sin-bin for repeat offenders too. That'get rid of the restle.

Great idea BUT..... So there's 1 minute until fulltime, we're behind the Storm by 1 point & we got six tackles at the halfway line. The ref keeps giving Manly "six again" including when now inside the Storm 20m line, right in front of the goal posts. Are Manly allowed to opt for a penalty goal instead of another "six again"?

Or you could go further. Just remove the rule that says markers must be square. Then there would be no need or excuse for the wrestling. It would force the dummy half to spread the ball too.
