Sironen or Winterstein?

1978

Reserve Grader
I like Sironen, but gee he has some mistakes in him.

A missed tackle that led to first try and dropped ball v Knights. I noticed last season he had a a few loose ball carries that cost us (in between some excellent performances). He seems a bit in the diamonds/rocks mould.

Starting to think Winterstein is the safer option, at least in the early part of in the season. Gives us more size/speed and better defence than Sironen. Under rated last season.

Hopefully Sirro proves me wrong against Eels, but needs more than a handful of strong games (which he had last year) to nail that starting second-rower spot.

ITs a though one, when he is on, he is bloody good, when he is off he can be costly.

He is more often on than frank so on that alone you stick with him, however I think we are missing a fair bit in cover defense without frank, he was always there making tough tackles last year

I haven't been backward in supporting Frankie ... I think what he provided last year was very under-rated and important, He was also very under-used by Green.

But having said that, I think there is more upside to Siro long term and he should be persevered with .... if he looks over his shoulder I think it will be Kelepi he sees coming for his spot not Frank.

I like having Frank around ... he will contribute something this year.

I like watching Sirro but ....
Against the Knights Sirro was not just average , he was garbage and that's how I saw it . He is a talent and a player of the future but many futures have been killed off by inconsistent play . Inconsistent plays costs us games , especially the close ones when miss tackles and drop balls count .
Pull your finger out Sirro !!!

I agree about Thompson. I thought he was very in-effective in that first game. I'd even consider:

11. Shaun Lane
12. Curtis Sironen
13. Jake Trbojevic

before Thommo at this point. I couldn't see any upgrade on Frank in Thommo.

Our overall game structure doesn't utilise our 2nd rowers in attack as much as other teams ... eg at Easts Cordner is a go-to guy ...

I had a gut feel that this would change a bit with a new 5/8 and Thommo on board but it hasn't ... early days so it still might ... but with all the ball playing in the middle, it just further reduces the workload on the edges.

Last year I would have suggested you were on something for having suggested Lane ... but he has had an impressive start to the season. But remember he has gone better as a prop ... just hope he won't fall asleep again if returned back to the 2nd row.

PSS ... On Thommo's first few runs ... he may not have a mortgage on one spot like we are all assuming ...
I was not overly overwhelmed by Thommo's first match as It didn't look like a 600,000 a year performance . Maybe he is saving himself for a big one against the eels

Siro has a higher ceiling but also a lower floor than Frank.

Can't believe people are questioning Thompson after one game. He might not have had the best game but I think he stiffened up our LHS, I don't recall the Knights scoring on that side. He is also on a rookie 5/8 side of the field so he probably isn't going to get a lot of opportunity in Round 1. Admittedly I was distracted somewhat whilst watching the game on Friday so I can't confess to paying as much attention to the action as I would normally. But his stats didn't look too bad. His pedigree is better than Frankenstein and Shady

I t was round one and we said it how we saw it .
Thommo did not play as well for us as he played for the Dragons last year . I expected a bit more from our 600,000 signing . I want our moneys worth 😉

$600K? That can’t be right surely?

You still can't cast judgment on a player after only one game he isn't going to fit in as well with a team that he has just joined as to a team he has been with for a number of years.
Give him time to settle in, then we will value your opinion more Bozo

Good point tbh re: Lane - loved him up the guts against The Knights - his defense is actually very good too. I wonder what relegated Frank though from a starting backrower, to NSW Cup in an off season. Just disappointed for him I guess. Then again, I actually feel bad for Brown as well.

I agree with you as I am a big fan of Thommo
I am only expressing my views on how Thommo played in round one

Thommo was fine in my eyes.

Took the call up strongly, wasn't dominated in the tackle and defended well.

Not his fault that Croker didn't pass him the ball more often.

Same criticism of Winterstein last year. It's not their fault they didn't see any ball. Our attacking structure is different to other teams as mentioned by @Woodsie. We seem to under utilise our 2nd row for whatever reason.
