Ryan Tandy has been found guilty of knowingly giving false or misleading evidence to a NSW Crime Commission hearing.

The verdict was delivered by Magistrate Claire Farnan at Downing Centre Local Court this morning. Tandy had been charged with three counts of knowingly giving false or misleading evidence and was found guilty of one and not guilty of the other two.

The magistrate has called a morning break and it is possible a decision on sentencing will be announced when the court resumes about midday.

The offence carries a maximum penalty of two years imprisonment.

Magistrate Farnan said she may have no choice but to impose a jail sentence.

‘‘I really don’t think that I have any option but to impose some form of imprisonment,’’ she said.

‘‘The authorities are pretty clear that that imprisonment should be full-time.’’

Lawyers for Tandy have requested a community service order or suspended sentence.

The Crime Commission hearings were conducted as an extension of the investigation by the Casino and Racing Investigation Unit into suspicious betting activity on an NRL game between North Queensland Cowboys and Canterbury Bulldogs at Townsville in August, 2010.

Tandy, who played for the Bulldogs in the match, had previously been found guilty of dishonestly attempting to obtain a financial advantage for others. He was given a 12-month good behaviour bond and fined $4000 on that charge, but is appealing the decision.

The match was the subject of an unusual plunge on a Cowboys penalty goal as the first scoring play.

John Elias last week had a charge of attempting to obtain a financial advantage by deception dismissed in court. Player agent Sam Ayoub this week had a hearing into a similar charge adjourned until February 13. Eastern suburbs real estate agent Greg Tait is awaiting his case on a similar charge.

The guilty verdict was related to the allegation Tandy gave false or misleading evidence with regards to his betting activities with jockey manager John Schell. The magistrate was scathing in her assessment of Tandy’s evidence on that matter.

I'd say he will get a couple of months at most and have the majority of his sentence suspended

Not sure his life will be ruined by it. His footy career probably, but life goes on. I'll say he probably won't see the inside of a cell. Sorry Ryan, my statement has maybe just sealed your fate if my luck runs true.

So Ryan could be in for a few 'Dazza' (as in 'Housos') moments in the Big House?

Will Ryan be forced into joining the 'Aryan Brotherhood' during his porridge stint?

He'll probably just help run the prison betting ring, providing some handy tandy inside info, in exchange for Bubba's sexual deviances to be directed elsewhere.
