Ruan Sims signs historic contract

The Cronulla Sharks have signed Ruan Sims on the first Rugby League women’s player contract.

The contract secures the Australian Jillaroos and NSW Blues captain’s services in the black, white and blue for the 2017 season.

Sims said she was thrilled to be able to make her commitment to the Sharks official and be part of the historic moment in Rugby League.

“It’s a hugely exciting moment and something I thought would happen so I feel very privileged to be in the position,” said Sims.

Of course this just shows the Sharks are supporting women's rugby league, and for that they deserve credit. I think some reading the headlines though may think she'll be playing in the forwards for the Sharks next year.

The concept of clubs taking on women and supporting women's league is a step in the right direction for many reasons. Firstly it attracts more women to the game and gets rid of the testosterone, macho, fruitloop mentality of the game. Australian Rules attracts women and therefore they encourage their kids to play the game. Winning over women is imperative.

And maybe one day seeing women's league games on a schedule with an NRL game may enhance the interest overall.

The netball, soccer and AFL are offering contracts to women players willy nilly, along with high profile national competitions. And in comparison Rugby League has just one contract with one woman player and mickey mouse competitions.

They have a couple of cousins with odd names. Orgas, who hardly ever leaves the house. Critisis, who doesn't have many friends. Pessimis, who has depression problems.

I wonder if the family are somehow related to that goal kicking master Eric Sims from Souths great years in the late 60s and early 70s...no no no. His name is actually spelt Simms so I guess not. Actually always liked Eric Simms and was fortunate a few years back to work with his wife. She reports he was as nice a bloke off the field as on it

I think they are related to the online virtual people "the sims". The brothers have played lots of first grade games but have basically been holograms for the majority of games, going on their impact.
