Champion Sydney Roosters co-captain Boyd Cordner looks set to miss at least the opening 12 games of the season, with the Tricolours making a formal submission to the NRL for $350,000 in salary cap relief.

The NRL community has thrown its support behind Cordner in recent months after the NSW State of Origin captain opted to rule himself out of last year’s end-of-season series due to repeated concussions.

Cordner suffered his fourth concussion of the season playing Origin I in Adelaide last November.

Under the NRL rules, the Roosters are eligible to apply for salary cap relief because Cordner sustained the injury playing representative football.

The maximum amount NRL clubs can apply for is $350,000 – which means the player in question must be sidelined for a minimum of 12 weeks.

The club has also sought the absolute best medical advice for Cordner from a variety of experts.

The Roosters co-captain is expected to opt to continue playing in the NRL provided the doctors green light his return.

The Roosters have led the way on the issue of concussion for the NRL by insisting players who suffer repeated head knocks sit out for up to six weeks.

Star players Cordner and Luke Keary have both spent extended periods of time on the sideline due to the Tricolours approach towards player welfare.

With Cordner expected to be sidelined for the opening three months of the season and club champion Mitch Aubusson retired, the Roosters are expected to turn to Angus Crichton and Sitili Tupouniua as the club’s starting edge backrowers.

The NRL confirmed to Fox Sports the Roosters formally submitted the Cordner paperwork last week.

and yet when we as a club asked for it many years ago nothing.

please let the roosters fail again in 2021.

one rule for the roosters others nothing zip!!

So a 4th concussion in rep football qualifies as the cause of injury but the other 3 playing in normal rounds doesn't count. Fu*kme dead is there no end to the continual bulls**t double standards in this sport.
Not while the slime bags are running the game.

Yes I would agree @Mark from Brisbane .

Mate, the worst part of it all is that the Chooks seem to be going along the lines that it was the concussion he suffered in Origin last year that is the cause of him looking to miss the first 3 months of the season, while completely ignoring the 3-4 other concussions he got while playing for his club. Including at least one or two last year before Origin.

Did we get any compensation for Snake or Skivvy being forced to sit on the sidelines for the entire 2017 season? Did we get any for not having Turbo or Walks for the majority of last year? Why should the Chooks?

Complete Bullocks. Can not attribute this injury to representative football due the progressive nature of it. ( numerous concussions) Hopefully this request if true is treated with the contempt it deserves. Suspect Brad Parker could be in a similar position if he suffers concussions like he did last year.

The roosters obviously stretch the cap but i dont see the issue in this at all. He was obviously fit to play and was selected and now he is not or they are playing it safe which is great for cordner.

Better than rushing him back

Its a rule thats in place. We could have used it if jake got injured and we were prepared to spend the extra coin which is often our problem. The financial committment isnt always there.

Its not a new rule the roosters are pushing like trying to make the young guy eligible

They are swarmy as hell but this rule and application helps protect the player . If they get 1 million worth of value now thats another story
