Status Quo
Reserve Grader
On Thursday 22/08/2024 at Leichhardt Oval, the referee made several incorrect decisions that gave The Wests Tigers the momentum to dominate the game.
The Manly players were discombobulated and disorientated by these baffling decisions and their performance was adversely affected.
The most blatant and confusing decisions were the penalties and/or 6 agains that were awarded to The Tigers.
On a few occasions the decisions should have been in favour of Manly, yet were given to The Tigers.
The most obvious one that I can recall is when The Tigers player refused to accept the tackle.
He was on his feet dragging a few Manly tacklers forward.
The Manly players thought that if they let go of The Tigers ball carrier that he would keep running.
So the Referee gave a 6 again to The Tigers for Manly not releasing the 'tackled' player.
Shortly after this The Tigers scored 6 points.
If I was the Referee, I would penalise the ball carrier for not playing the ball where they were tackled or at least get them to come back to the mark where they were deemed to have been tackled.
Ball carriers struggle and fight to break free from the tackle and then they protest for a penalty for not being released.
Referees need to be aware of the cunning tactics that a lot of players use.
We need smarter Referees that can make smart, correct decisions.
