Manly have shown that they cannot manage their roster working with a 30 man roster. There are quite a few teams that just the salary cap to have 30 players plus the 5 development players. In doing this, the team just looks after the elite of their juniors with no guarantee in this climate that the player will stay once another club comes sniffing.
In the old days, pre salary cap and when a contract was honoured, clubs would list 55 player squads before the season started which was added to when the then Presidents Cup concluded.
The last salary cap increase has totally been wasted. Such an increase that by the majority, elite players got the benefit and especially the ones that have in their contract to receive a % of the salary cap increases. Politis has stated that they do not sign players with that clause. A wise move and it would be outlawed in my competition.
I agree that the base rate should have been increased for players in the top 30, but so much of the recent increase should have been used to include a base payment to ISP players (reserve grade) and possibly a number of players from the Massey Cup squad.
What an opportunity for a team when their season is gone, to start blooding some of these players but at times you can't because they are outside of the 30 man squad or their inclusion will push you over the salary cap. Which is why Hasler had some players who were not that good on the bench week in week out. It had happened to St George years ago and the NRL would not let them bring up a player. This would be the greatest form of development available and to even out the playing field in the years to come.
