Newcastle star Kalyn Ponga is set to switch to five-eighth NRL next season, with Connor Watson moving to fullback.

Newcastle star Kalyn Ponga is confident he can handle being the No.1 target for rival teams should he make the switch from fullback to five-eighth next season.

Ponga is yet to rejoin his teammates for pre-season as he continues to recover from major ankle surgery, but is expected to train in the halves when he returns.

Playmaker Connor Watson is pencilled in to revert to fullback, despite signing with the Knights last year intent on establishing himself in the No.6 jumper.

However, Watson now insists he simply just wants to start games, which he was unable to do with the Sydney Roosters two years ago.

"I've come up here and I didn't get to play too much footy last year, but I just want to win football games and everyone's here with that same mindset," Watson said.

"If I'm playing one and we're winning football games, I'm happy."

Watson is also on the comeback trail after going under the knife to repair a major groin issue that troubled him for a large chunk of the season.

The surgery later revealed a tendon had to be reattached to connect his groin to his abdominal muscles, a process which delayed his comeback for another three weeks.

"The plan is I'll try at one and he'll go at six, just see how it works out. We'll do a bit of both, but we both can play in those positions," Watson said.

"For me, it's not really that big of a deal. If I play one, I'm happy to play there. I think it allows me to play more of my natural game anyway."

The move is expected to allow Ponga more use of the ball, although it is also likely to ensure he gets plenty of attention in defence.

Encouragingly the 20-year-old showed his defensive strength in his State of Origin debut this year, when he was lauded for making 28 of his 32 tackles as a utility.

He was then used at five-eighth in his final appearance of the season in Newcastle's round 23 win over Penrith, where he made 16 of 18 tackles.

"It'll be different, but I look forward to it," Ponga said.

"I played half against the Panthers and when I played next to (Lachlan Fitzgibbon), I felt like we had that little bit of combination and it felt good.

"We were all on the same page. That's the sort of stuff you build in pre-season, but I'd be pretty confident."

Recall some consensus [ including myself ] at the time when he signed for the Knights for around 700 k a season or so and the perception that they paid overs for him . Seems like they got a quite good deal now and based on his recent outstanding season

This kid is a superstar . I cant wait to see our Young Hopa shine in the NRL as well

Could be an important move for Tom Turbo's representative future .......
Well , The way I see it is that we have Ted the rooster in the no1 spot and he is a specialist fullback
I see our Tom in the cenrtes with Ponga at 5/8 . That is lethal

One thing is he’s going to cop a LOT more tackles at 5/8, and he’s quite smallish, interesting times I think.

But agree the kid is a freak, and I just can’t believe the Girls let him go.

He'd be pushing for an upgrade very soon I would think. Especially if the Knights improve next season.
Well they do have a bottomless war chest now, maybe even bigger than the rorters bottomless war chest. Naw, who am I kidding, no one will even come close to matching the rorters war chest lol

Could play anywhere. Super talent. And a good kid by all reports. He brings people to the game.

They are just playing catch up after being a side for many years that no player of any worth would consider.

But you are right , no side can do what the Rorters can do, which is sickening as if it continues it’s hard to see them not being in the GF for years to come.

I personally think they should leave him at 1 and Watson at 6. He can pick his time to chime in from the back and I reckon he is a better fullback than Watson and they won't lose much playing Connor at 6 where he might be physically more capable and is a more mature head.

At the Cowboys he was behind Lachlan Coote who was their premiership winning fullback and essentially their #2 playmaker (IIRC he used to do more kicking than Morgan until about 2017). Remember 2015-17 were incredible seasons from the Cowboys where they often managed to win from nowhere.

At the time Ponga signed for the Knights (for 900k per season) he had only played a handful of games but was already asking for an enormous amount of money.

Knights had nothing to lose by taking a gamble at that price. But comparing to the problems we had keeping our premiership winning team together you can't hold it against the Cowboys for sticking solid.

I agree, he should stay at fullback

JT probably sucked up alot of their cap, and prob though they could hold onto him through loyalty (which is mostly worthless in NRL these days)

JT needed to retire end of last year, and they could have then held onto him, but knights swooped on him with big coin. They also felt the pinch of winning a GF and the modern day player asking price despite the cows "approved" apartment TPAs with developers.

The kid is a freak, but I share your assessment. He is small and still underdeveloped physically. If he was 24, I would think he would have no issue, but he is still very young.

That said a year or 2 in the halves might turn him into a weapon if he returns to FB. All modern FBs are becoming a 3rd/4th play makers anyway.
