Player Ratings - Round 21

Journey Man
We didn't play near well enough to win on Friday night in Auckland. Simple as that.

Tom Trbojevic 5/10 - Even when we had the majority of possession, Turbo struggled to get into the game with his usual impact, though he did give a nice pass to Suli for Garrick's second try.

Jorge Taufua 4/10 - Did some decent runs to help out the tiring forwards, but that's about it.

Brad Parker 3/10 - Lower score because he didn't get time to do much before injuring his knee literally doing nothing more than a tap re-start. His loss caused a major re-shuffle that didn't work.

Moses Suli 5/10 - Although he did run for 100 metres, Moses was fairly quiet against the Warriors.

Reuben Garrick 7/10 - Never gave up and was rewarded with a couple of good tries.

Dylan Walker 6/10 - Started at pivot, moved to centre and eventually went back to pivot. IMO Des should have left him at 5/8 after Parker went off because he actually looked a lot more comfortable there.

Daly Cherry-Evans 3/10 - Very poor in the first half with some dumb, panic play you don't expect from him. Settled down a bit in the second half, but still nowhere near enough. Did play injured for a fair period, but still not his best night out in maroon and white.

Addin Fonua-Blake 7/10 - Big minutes from AFB and was arguably our best forward in a beaten pack.

Api Koroisau 3/10 - We looked so much better with Fainu at dummy half. Api's poor passing also cost us at times, especially that dumb forward pass to Jake that killed the momentum we had at the end of the game.

Martin Taupau 7/10 - Like AFB was one forward that the Warriors struggled to contain.

Joel Thompson 6/10 - As usual, Thommo never gave up out there.

Curtis Sironen 4/10 - Fairly well contained by the Warriors.

Jake Trbojevic 5/10 - Jake never gives up, but I thought his impact on Friday was limited.

Manase Fainu 6/10 - We looked a lot more composed out of dummy half when he came on.

Corey Waddell 5/10 - Played mostly in the unfamiliar position of centre. Not bad, but like so many of his team mates, struggled to make an impact.

Morgan Boyle 4/10 - Limited time before going off for a HIA.

Taniela Paseka 4/10 - Another Manly forward well contained by the Warriors defence on the night.

We were very flat on Friday night in Auckland. The Warriors not only out-played us, but clearly out enthused us and that showed by the fact that it took until Adam Blair got sin-binned with 12 minutes to go for us to actually put points on the board, during which time the Warriors had already built up a match winning 18-0 lead. A telling story is that at one point during the game, Manly had 22 tackles in the opposition 20 metre zone late in the first half.....and had nothing to show for it. On the other side of the coin, the Warriors had 0 tackles in our 20 and had 3 tries.....18 points to show for their efforts.

They took the chances presented to them. We threw most of ours away until very late.

I've read so much that the refs allowed the Warriors to get away with things like laying all over the tackled player and that they weren't giving Manly a fair go. Then I look at the 12-5 penalty count in our favour and I am left thinking that blaming the referees for the loss is kinda clutching at straws.

The reality is that we just did not play well until we had a one player advantage with Blair in the bin. We put in some really dumb kicks (DCE on the first tackle of a 7 tackle set immediately springs to mind), some dumb passes and generally seemed to get back to the 2018 method of panicking when things didn't go our way.

Whichever way the side runs out on Thursday night against the Tigpies, I hope Des puts a rocket up their arses because heading into the Finals you want strong performances, not shaky ones that expose weaknesses. And we were shaky against the Warriors.

Injuries aside we’ll be better after the loss, You could feel one coming but I just didn’t think it would be this one.

Pretty good summary I feel.

The injuries were obviously the main concern. I just hope that they now have the lost the had to have out of their system.

One thing and I didn't point out, and its been covered in another thread. We could have taken the lead early (a-la the game against Melbourne) with a couple of very easy penalty goals from pretty much dead in front of the posts. We didn't respect the poor weather or the level of commitment the Warriors were showing in defence by declining those kicks.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but I do remember shaking my head both times when it was apparent that we'd be taking a tap. Taking the points against Melbourne definitely helped. Not taking them against the Warriors proved to be a mistake because in those conditions, even just 2 or 4 points makes the opposition have to play catch up football. Its hard enough to do that in the dry, more so in the wet.

I hope they learned a lesson from it.

I can feel your pain. That was probably the hardest review you’ve had to do. There are no excuses. We sucked.

The hardest part was only giving DCE a 3. I almost made it a 4 because he did settle down a bit in the second half and made that nice break down the left. But again at the end of it he seemed to panic a bit and kicked way too early which allowed RTS enough time to turn and chase while keeping Tom chasing through at a safe enough distance. I honestly thought Cherry should have drawn RTS in a lot closer before kicking or even passing, or even throwing a dummy and going himself (it wasn't the last tackle from memory). But that kick, his shocker in the first half, plus some other things, made me score him at just 3.

He's a much better player than that. He just didn't show it too much last Friday.

I also think one of the things that hurt us was Brad Parker's injury and its aftermath. I thought at the time that the better option would have been to leave Dylan Walker at 5/8 and put Waddell into the centres (he's filled in their before earlier this year). Des eventually made that move, but for pretty much the rest of the first half we had Walker go to left centre, Siro moving to 5/8 and Paseka going into the back row.

It didn't work. Paseka was a bit all at sea in the back row proving that he's really a front rower, and neither Walker or Siro looked comfortable in their rearranged roles. I don't remember Dylan even touching the ball during that time while Siro only saw it on limited occasions. The problem also was that DCE didn't seem to know who his halves partner was at the time so went back to old habits of trying to do everything himself, often with disastrous results.

We looked a lot more settled once Walker went back to the halves, Siro went back to the 2nd row and Waddell slotted into centre. Its why as much as I think Croker should be the 5/8 probably from next year, right now we're better off with Dylan in the halves with maybe Elliot coming in to replace Parker for the time being.

@HoldenV8 can you edit your Title to Round 21 🙂

Just realised. Thanks @:D

V8 you were generous with DCE as it’s probably the worst game I have seen him play. Yes the forwards were to a certain extent owned which makes it difficult for the half back however his decision making was poor.

Thanks @HoldenV8 interesting summary as always. Back in the day I used to enjoy checking the player ratings in the old Rugby League Week. Of course it is highly subjective, and a bit tricky comparing a player who busts his gut all game playing injured but makes a few poor decisions, with a bench player who plays limited minutes and does nothing of note. Not a criticism, just an anomaly in the scoring system!

Martin Taupau 7/10 - Like AFB was one forward that the Warriors struggled to contain.

A huge part of every props job is .... get forward dominance and control the ruck ..... in this Marty was not only ineffective ... he was missing in action ..... pathetic ...

No matter how nice they are, You can throw all your personal stats in the bin ... they are useless as this week proves .... if you don't have dominance in the ruck .... Warriors made us their bitches ..... with only AFB fighting back ...

Marty for mine would get one point for putting his shorts on the right way ... 1/10 .....

No argument. Cherry had a bad night at the office.

Ha! Missing the old RLW player ratings is what got me started on this lol

Each to their own mate. There are arguments both ways. You saw his game as pathetic or ineffective, I saw it slightly different.

Either way it was the same result. We lost a game that we seemed to think was won just by turning up.

I am concerned that we have started a couple of important games really flat this year. Our first halves against Souths and the Warriors recently were of concern because the boys should have been up for both of those games and the 4 competition points would have us in the top 4 right now. Don't get me wrong I am incredibility proud of the boys this season but I am concerned they are going to throw away a great opportunity unless they get their mental preparation right. When we lack go forward we start playing side to side and lose our penetration up the middle. We look great when we play fast and direct. I have faith that Des will address this issue and if he does anything is still possible.

I think the re-shuffle of Sirro to 5/8 was a big factor in our loss. I think the way Sirro and Thommo set the edges is a huge under appreciated factor for us and one of the main reasons we have such a potent attack. They both straighten us up and play tough. DCE to Sirro is a pet play and DCE seemed a bit lost without it. And we didn't see the best of Sirro at all as 5/8.

We'll have to do without it again this week with Sirro out. Massive loss when you look back at our recent records with our without Sirro. Whoever fills in needs to be prepared to take the line on a straighten the attack and take tough carries, not slide across and crab.

I thought Tafua had a good match. He took some really tricky bombs, especially considering the greasy conditions.
Remember how everyone was critical of his handling? I can't remember him spilling a kick this season.
Time to give Jorge some credit for improving this aspect of his game. He is not just a metre-eater.
He deserved a 7 in my humble opinion.

I believe Waddell will enjoy the edge and he will do the job for us on Thursday if selected. i would like to see him running some Sirro lines of DCE.

Jorge hasn't actually dropped a kick or knocked on in general play since the loss to St Merge in Wollongong. I think his only handling error has been one slight knock on while playing the ball I think in the loss against the Titans. Before that he was good for at least one of each per game. His handling has really improved this year.

I wish Api's dummy half passing improved as quickly.
