Player Ratings - Manly vs Cows

HoldenV8

Journey Man
That was a pretty piss poor effort tonight. Nth Qld had one first grade forward and they killed us.

Anyway.....

Matt Wright 2/10 - May have been seen as the safe choice, even by me, but he was a liability tonight.

Jorge Taufua 5/10 - Went well until his big hit which did more damage to him than his opponent. Failed the HIA at half time.

Moses Suli 5/10 - Solid, but his defensive reads need work.

Brian Kelly 6/10 - Gets crowded too often in attack by sideways running team mates. Needs to work on his defence. Good footwork and his dummy half try was good work.

Akuila Uate 4/10 - Strongish runs early in tackles, but otherwise unsighted. Not great defence.

Trent Hodkinson 3/10 - Poor kicking game and needs to do more than just be a link passer.

Daly Cherry-Evans 2/10 - Easily his worst game in a Manly jumper. Made Thurston look like he was 25 and at his peak.

Addin Fonua-Blake 4/10 - Didn't really do much tonight did he.....wasn't bad, but wasn't all that crash hot either.

Api Koroisau 5/10 - Made some good runs from dummy half, but his double pumping dummies at first receiver while standing still do nothing but allow the defence to crowd you and take away most options.

Martin Taupau 5/10 - Sure he made a lot of metres, but he needs to pick and choose when to offload. Some of his offloads hit grass rather than the chest of a team mate.

Joel Thomson 6/10 - Defence was OK, but runs too much at markers looking for a penalty that never comes.

Jack Gosiewsk 4/10 - Not good his hit on Thurston which was very late. Dislocated shoulder could see him out for a while.

Shaun Lane 7/10 - Easily our best tonight until he got knocked out. Would still like to see him get mean out there and put some mongrel in his game.

Frank Winterstein 3/10 - Frustrating as hell. Oh sure his defence was OK, but he doesn't go looking for work in attack. In that respect he reminds me a bit of T-Rex, needs a rocket up his arse to run the ball.

Brad Parker 2/10 - I'm starting to question whether he really is first grade standard as he seems to offer very little. Kinda hoping Tom Wright gets the next chance at being on the bench.

Lloyd Perrett 3/10 - Didn't get much game time and didn't do anything with what little he had.

Toafofoa Sipley 6/10 - Made some strong runs.

Trent Barrett 1/10 - Do we actually have a game plan? Do we have a Plan B or even Plan C if things don't work? This team under him seems to have zero creativity, zero set plays. We're a bunch of individuals.

Well, that's my take. By rights we should have won easily tonight.....at home. But we were flat from the start and never recovered.

Generally agree... dont think Dce was worse than uate or hodgko (not a great deal in it tho) and i reckon u are a bit harsh on Api and Marty but otherwise agree...

Right on the money with those ratings

And spare a thought for me. I’m going to Christchurch !!!

My main criticism of Marty is that as the game went on, he was trying to get a miracle offload in just about every hit up. By about the 50 minute mark when he was gassed, they were only using 2 tacklers on him, the others were waiting to either intercept an offload or simply shut down the one who had picked it up.

He doesn't need to offload in every tackle or even every other tackle. Just tuck the ball under the arm and run hard, then get as quick a play the ball as possible. He made 6 offloads tonight, maybe 2 of them got us into a better position.

I thought suli played well. He made some crucial tackles under pressure, some half busts and fended through plenty of players on the edge as well as taking a few hit ups.

Give the “Mount Difficulty Pinot Noir” a go, I’m not usually into the light reds but that’s an absolute ripper.

Excellent with maybe a seafood Paella or seafood Pasta.

That’ll at least give you one lasting memory of the Windy City!!

Thanks Mark. Let’s hope I wash that Paella down with an eagles win !

Agreed. I think he played quite well in a VERY lacklustre team performance.

The only blokes who had a dig were Lane, Thompson, Suli and Kelly.....IMO.

Completely agree with you - I'd add Taufua whilst he was on, really made some yardage coming out of our own end.

Disappointments last night for me notably were our 8 and 10. They should have taken it upon themselves to dominate against a weakened Cowboys pack. Yet we were completely dominated in the ruck - quick play the balls led to Thurston having all the time in the world to organise their sets.

Yeah Taufua was having a dig while he was on for sure.

Agreed on the props. If there was ever an opportunity for those two to dominate a game, it was last night. Was really disappointed with their lavk of interest and intensity.

Those two and DCE were quite frankly, p*ss poor.

Wouldn't argue with many of those scores....but I thought Joel Thompson was pretty decent and never stopped trying, and AFB was OK too its just when he was on we had little ball. Akuila put in a shift too.

Wright, Parker, Perrett, and the halves should all be on very very very thin ice. Parker I can maybe forgive he's young and back from injury. Only surviving cause theres nobody else.

yet again we lost the ruck ... our play the balls were in slo mo and the opposition were yet again allowed to do quick ones ...

Just played into the Cowboys hands , there really should be enough experience [ notably from our halves ] and coaching staff [ including Cartwright ] to then be able to reset things[ if things are not working ] . Something really lacking there .

It’s feckin head scratching stuff. The wins over Brisbane and the Storm we’re off the back of quick play the balls, even noted by the commentators during the games.

So how the hell do you go from low error rate fast play the balls to the garbage served up last night? It honestly defies belief! And none of that is the result of missing players as aside from Jake, they weren’t doing the heavy hit ups.

Very harsh on Thommo - he was excellent imo and along with Lane the only 2 who can hold their heads high.

15 runs for 161m who cares who he is running at, that's a great return.
