One more rule change needed

The Who

Journey Man
A huge tick to the one-ref rule change. It is something most of us have been crying out for, and it proved last night to be a winner with less penalties and a more open spectacle. And it laid bare the referee association's earlier whinge that NRL was too fast for just one ref.
The six-again seemed to work although it did allow the attacking team to get on a roll and which proved/will prove very difficult for even the best defences to stop....
For this reason I'm proposing that the NRL adopts a rule used in the Super League days, and in many other sports:
* The team that scores kicks off to re-start play.
Under our current rule the poor scored-against team has to keep giving up possession. With the new six-again rule it means greater chance for one team dominating possession as happened last night when I understand Doesn'tmatta enjoyed a 63% possession advantage.

I like it. The other rule ive been hating is the differential penalty from scrums. Teams are deliberately breaking early to set their line. Should be a normal penalty where you can go for goal to stop teams cheating this rule.

We probably are a nation of whingers and will never be happy with everything that happens.

On Sunday if we get about 8 sets at the line and score twice I’ll be praising it as the greatest ever rule change BUT if the reverse happens I’ll be as ****ty as all hell.

No wonder Greenturd was unpopular.

There is one side effect of the new 6 again rule and even after last nights game, Brisbane are paying the price.

Because of the roll on the Worms got early and the amount of defence the Drongos had to do, Brisbane were basically gassed halfway through the first half. And more in more in defence as the game went on, tired players were just hanging out arms and we did see Brisbane pulled up for a few high tackles through the second half. And it looks like as a result, they are going to lose Katoni Staggs for a couple of weeks on a Grade 2 charge.

Until teams get their fitness back up to full, and until they get a handle on not giving away 6 tackles 2-3-4-5 times in a row ...we're probably going to see some tired, careless high tackles over the next few weeks and some players will end up with suspensions.

Or a lot of blow out scores.

It will really be interesting to see if last nights game was an aberration, maybe caused by a gun shy ref or a defence testing the new rules and sadly lacking in application.

If every game sees a blowout I wonder how long it will be until they either change the rules or teams massively change the way they play to accommodate??

Suspensions, injuries, blowout scores ... they are all going to happen until teams get their fitness back and get a handle on the new 6 again rule.

Thankfully though, I don't think the rules will get changed on the fly like they have done in recent past. I get the impression that V'Landys and co. won't continuously backflip on things just to suit the media or fan outrage. It'll be the way it is and we'll all just have to get used to it.

And you know something? IMO ... about bloody time. That's another thing the AFL has always done better. Their rules are basically set in concrete at the start of a season. If a new rule is introduced and it proves to be a poor one for whatever reason, then bad luck, for better or worse its there until the final siren blows to end the Grand Final and teams just have to adapt. The rule isn't changed or just dropped mid season like the NRL have a tendency to do.

Two blow out games for Klein to hand out one repeat set.
