Reports Manly paying Olakau’atu more this year, above his contract in a show of good will.

MANLY’S CLEVER PLOY AS RIVALS CIRCLE OLAKAU’ATU

Elsewhere, Manly second rower Haumole Olakau’atu may not be off-contract until the end of the 2025 season but that has not stopped the Sea Eagles from already planning ahead.
Read reported on Triple M that the Sea Eagles have paid Olakau’atu more money this year to reward him for his breakout 2022 campaign.

It may cost Manly in the short-term and was a move the club “didn’t have” to make according to Read, but it could pay off in the future with rival teams already circling.

“Rival teams already circling” for a player that can’t officially be approached until November 2024,interesting manager work this one.And he is nowhere near Origin ready,in fact I can’t see him being Origin ready until around 2035

The were talking about the upgrade on abc radio yesterday. Said it was unusual to upgrade a current year without negotiating an extension of contract.

Buzz with a different perspective:

Manly has a problem over the long-term future of outstanding edge-forward Haumole Olakau’atu.

Last year his former coach Des Hasler and former CEO Stephen Humphreys told him he’d get a contract upgrade to recognise his rise to becoming one of the best second-rowers in the comp.

He was on a three-year contract but earning about half of what the top edge forwards are on.

New coach Anthony Seibold and CEO Tony Mestrov understood his position.

They have given him an upgrade for this season.

However there is no certainty about the final two years of his contract.

They will chat again at the end of the season.

Other clubs are aware of the drama and have spoken to his manager.

This guy is a potential superstar. Absolute dynamite on Manly’s right edge.

He had a blinder opposite Billy Kikau in Manly’s impressive win over the Bulldogs at Brookvale on Saturday.

Olakau’atu has a huge chance of playing State of Origin for the NSW Blues this year, especially with doubts over Angus Crichton’s immediate playing future.

The Tongan international was born in Guilford in Sydney’s west.

Him and Liam Martin would be a lethal combination for the Blues.

The Sea Eagles do have their salary cap issues. Tom Trbojevic, his brother Jake and halfback Daly Cherry Evans are soaking a lot of the money.

Apart from Olakau’atu, they also have a sensational young centre in Toluta’u Koala who has attracted interest from Wallaby coach Eddie Jones.

Highest paid edge forwards in the NRL
David Fifita: $1.1m
Billy Kikau: $900k
Jerimiah Nanai: $850k
Liam Martin: $750k
Isa’ah Papali’i: $700k
Felise Kaufusi: $750k
Tyson Frizell: $700k
Jaydn Su’A: $700k
Angus Crichton: $680k
John Bateman: $650k
