So, as you all know, I wrote the NRL about their tardiness in the decision making process around Brett Stewart and Steve Matai, and our request for approval around medical retirements. Unfortunately, they intimated (unless I'm readind this wrong - please let me know), that The Sea Eagles aren't providing all the necessary paperwork / information (which is pretty disappointing). Here it is for you in full - thought's?
To The Administration of the NRL & Todd Greenburg,
I write to you, concerning the NRL's procrastination around the decision making process, regarding the allowances available to Steve Matai, and The Manly Warringah Sea Eagles similar to that afforded by The NRL to Anthony Watmough, and the Parramatta Eels.
Whilst this submission / request by individual & club may be monetarily based, what The NRL obviously isn't considering in its tardiness, is the affinity said player had with the clubs very passionate fans, family members, key stake holders, and their want to farewell these club legends in a timely & appropriate manner (Brett Stewart included), befitting their status in the game & for the club / members.
I therefore implore Todd Greenburg to step up as a leader in the game, offer the same dispensation afforded the Parramatta Eels & allow the fans their God given right to send off these diamonds of the game , without the negative shawl of yet another hard edged anti Northern Beaches Greenburg decision making process darkening the experience.
As can be seen statistically, goodwill & NRL crowds are diminishing, attributed in part to affinity with players, clubs & fans widening. 100,975 fans attended games round one, some 13.8% down on the previous year, and the lowest since 1996, when only 30,198 watched just the four games played.
Todd, please have a sense of honor in your decision making process. Understand the implications. Let fans be fans, and send off two true club legends the right way.
Please don't provide me with a vanilla, stapled response from a fellow staffer. I'd love to hear your insight into your resolution & decision making process, and if you don't mind, that will be published publicly.
Looking forward to YOUR reply.
Kind Regards,
Ryan Winter

Hi Ryan,
Thank you for your email to Todd and apologies for the delay.
We are not in a position to discuss individual cases. However as set out in the CBA and NRL rules, the NRL will make a decision on cases such as medical retirement when ALL the required information is provided. This should not stop the Club, if the player and the club have both agreed the player has retired, in farewelling the player.
It is also worth noting that the CBA requires players to be paid out their full entitlement of any future years of their contract or reach a suitable termination with the Club.
I hope this helps with your query and we thank you for your passionate support of Manly and Rugby League.
Kind regards
Robert
