BRISBANE has responded in its battle to retain star centre Israel Folau by proposing the establishment of a central contract system similar to those used in rugby union and cricket which would see the NRL dip into a special fund to top up the contracts of elite players.

They may be able to make it so that only 1 player at each club is eligible for the top up. Another option may be that if they have to step in to top up a players pay, the NRL or whoever is going to control this, has the right to tell said player where they are going to play.

Why can't players have 3 separate contracts,

1 for Club, 1 for State and 1 for National with the ARL (with backing of the NRL and the Television Rights) paying contracts for state and national. So we don't end up with players that get paid heaps to play only club footy.

Guys - this is as good a thread as any, but has anyone else been thinking Brisbane may make a huge play for Matai now that Falou is going?

Matai's a QLD boy, and the Broncs have a hole needed filling with a big name player.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Hannant / Matai & Tate all going to The Broncs to be honest.

Qld is part of NZ now is it?

he played 1 year for Ipswich then came to Manly, hardly a Qld boy.

But he may well be a broncos target, imagine the fights they would get into with he and Hodges in the centres :)

As the article state's what about the Kiwi, Samoan, Tongan, PNG etc players. If they did bring in a system like what there proposing how many guy's will change their allegiance's to Australia in the hope of getting selected for Origin just to get that little extra money. It'll be cutting our nose of despite our face.
Wait until the next TV deal where all three things are auctioned of separtley then will be paid day for the players.

Well he first moved to QLD from NZ, so yeah, he's from QLD before he's from NSW, and yeah, he's from NZ before that.

Smart arse :)

I wouldn't actually be that against this to be honest.

Being an NSW supporter, having Foran and Hodko in the halves together would suit me fine, or Benji for that matter, but most of these guys probably wouldn't switch or they would have already

Ant it would be up to the NZRL to play there star players and prevent them from the Code. Players like Hayne can play for Australia or be contracted to "Australia" then play the world cup for Fiji.
