NRL 2022: Former NSW Cup Player of the Year Zac Hosking in frame for Broncos trial

He’s the son of a legendary rugby league larrikin, a former NSW Cup Player of the Year and gunning for a spot in the 17 at the Brisbane Broncos.

The Broncos are set to unearth boom backrower Zac Hosking in this weekend’s trial match as players prepare to push for a Round 1 starting spot.
Brisbane Broncos kick off their year with a trial match against feeder club Wynnum Manly on Saturday afternoon at Kougari Oval with several new faces in the frame to play for the Broncos, including Hosking.
The former NSW Cup Player of the Year is at Red Hill on a train-and-trial contract and trained with the suspected Broncos trial team during their Monday morning session.

The 24-year-old is the son of former South Sydney and Manly player David ‘Mule’ Hosking and was part of the Newcastle Knights system last year before signing with Broncos feeder club Wynnum Manly for the 2022 season.

Hosking has been likened to Maroons hard man Dallas Johnson by his Brisbane teammates as he looks to make a case for an NRL debut this year.

“He’s been good,” Broncos centre Brenko Lee said.

“He’s got a big future in front of him.

“He’s the sort of guy you need (in your team), sort of like a Dallas Johnson.

“They just do all the dirty work and gritty stuff that no one talks about but guys like that are really big on the team.

“A bit like Dale Finucane. People don’t really talk about it but you need those guys and they’re the blokes you want to play with.

“They put their head where most people don’t put their feet.

“He’s got a big future here and if he plays some good games in the trial matches he’ll be pushing really well for a spot.”

He made his name (sort of) at Suck Sh-tney before returning in 1990. I don’t think Fulton was ever a big fan. He left during Fulton’s first stint as coach, returning when Lowe took over. Then he faded away rapidly during Fulton’s second coaching stint at Brookvale.

I believe the Mule has been in Newcs for while now so he would think he would have been in their systems. I am a huge Mule fan and would have picked this up earlier if he was one of our juniors. Strange he is 24. Would have thought he had bloomed by now.

Re mule senior, I remember he went to souths for a stint, but played his best footy back at manly under coach Lowe.

I suppose if it came to the crunch and you had to pick two out of Mark Carrol, David Gillespie and the Mule, then the answer is a no brainer as to who was going to be left out.

Great work by the mule all through this game - part of a try at 8 mins:

Also O'Donnell. Wests offside all day, frustrating game.

Carroll and Cementspie joined in 1994. My memory is that Mule’s career was on the slide in Fulton’s first year back, 1993, or maybe 1992 - Lowe’s last. That was a bad season all round.

The high point for Hosking was the 1991 season, when he was picked for City.

I note he is a football club member, so his heart is still with Manly.

Definately Mule Snr has a Manly heart.

Saw him in Mudgee last year, downing cans like a man possessed at the races on the Sunday.

I will never hear a bad word against the great man.

Have been a fan since sharing what was for me an under age drink at the old steyne front bar
