Memories: NRL hypocrisy

Matabele

Journey Man
I awoke this morning with one of the previous songs used by the NRL to promote the code running through my head.

Chumbawumbah

I get knocked down
But I get up again
You're never going to keep me down

All about binge drinking.

Fair call, but they changed the context of the song, to refer to being knocked down, so to be fair their version wasnt

They used the original song and *everyone* who listened to Triple J at the time knew exactly what the song was about.

If they weren't aware of the double meaning then they are dumber than we think.

The title line was also a good description of the football at the time with a wide 10 metre rule and unlimited interchange.

Not everyone knew the what the original song was about. Probably the majority of people didn't.

But I see your point.

With lines like

he drinks a whiskey drink, he drinks a lager drink, etc hard to not see the meaning really

My stepson at the time didn't take that in, the under 12 side I was coaching at the time didn't take that in, they took in the knock down get up again part.

Do you reckon the majority of fans over 40 really took the words to the whole song in?

Nuh, the majority of fans would have taken it for what they were mean't to take it for-  a rugby league theme song.

Sure but it made me drink a lot of vodka, whiskey and lager drinks too

Unfortunately I didn't need the song to make me drinks lots of whiskey and lager.

That was my irish and scottish ancestors fault.

Maybe it sublimily? made me drink vodke though.

We'll be singing
When we're winning
We'll be singing

2x
I get knocked down
But I get up again
You're never going to keep me down

Pissing the night away
Pissing the night away

He drinks a whisky drink
He drinks a vodka drink
He drinks a lager drink
He drinks a cider drink
He sings the songs that remind him
Of the good times
He sings the songs that remind him
Of the better times

"Oh Danny Boy
Danny Boy
Danny Boy..."

2x
I get knocked down
But I get up again
You're never going to keep me down

Pissing the night away
Pissing the night away

He drinks a whisky drink
He drinks a vodka drink
He drinks a lager drink
He drinks a cider drink
He sings the songs that remind him
Of the good times
He sings the songs that remind him
Of the better times

"Don't cry for me
Next door neighbour..."

2x
I get knocked down
But I get up again
You're never going to keep me down

We'll be singing
When we're winning
We'll be singing

No, but seriously.  The song was in the charts for ages so I struggle to see that anyone under 40 was under any illusions as to the content.  It is one of the most banal and repetitive songs of the last decade.
