AN ASTONISHING 11 NRL clubs could be forced to shed players to be salary cap compliant ahead of the 2018 season.
NRL 360 co-host Paul Kent revealed the stunning figure on Fox League on Wednesday night.

The revelation comes after it was revealed by Fairfax Media Aaron Woods could remain at Wests Tigers if salary cap drama at Canterbury forces a contract backflip.

The competition’s salary cap beyond 2017 is yet to be agreed upon as negotiations between the NRL and the Rugby League Players Association continue.

The big implication of the prolonged discussions is some NRL clubs have been planning towards an approximated 2018 salary cap of $10 million, whereas it’s likely to be almost $1 million less than that.

It means those clubs may need to cull players from their roster to ensure they are compliant before next season kicks off.

“My understanding is there’s somewhere in the vicinity of 11 clubs who are over, and they’re working to get back under,” Kent said.

“The NRL, what they’ve done is put out a figure some time ago of about 9.1 (million) that clubs have to work towards.

“Clubs are now working towards that because some clubs had budgeted on a $10 million salary cap, so they’re now working towards that.

“There’s a lot of cattle trading going on at the moment, a lot of discussions between managers and clubs and trying to move this guy on, players are being shopped around for no other reason than clubs are trying to take money out of their cap.”

Kent confirmed the Bulldogs are one of the clubs who may need to shed players from the 2018 roster.

But he explained it wouldn’t necessarily come at the cost of big-name recruits Woods or Kieran Foran.

“Canterbury are over, and Canterbury are shopping around some of their players, they are trying to move players on because they need to find room to bring Woods and Foran into the team,” Kent said.

“The NRL will give them to a certain point in time, it will be sometime later next year, where they have to be cap compliant. The Dogs will work to be under that cap.

“If it gets to it and the players have been unable to be moved on — this is just a theory — the NRL won’t register Kieran Foran or Aaron Woods or possibly both.

“It won’t be last in first out, it will be up to the Bulldogs to decide on who they want to keep.”

I can feel another clean out coming on .....

Not from us.

Barrett mentioned this very thing on a Fox Sports Podcast some time ago. When asked about recruitment he said the club would sit back, hopeful they could pick up some players on the cheap with clubs having to offload talent to become salary cap compliant.

I am sure we would be wanting to offload some players as well .

We should be fine, and get rewarded for it.

Oooooooo, Parramatta though! They are certainly over, and the donkeys, and the roosters (let's take JWH), and the storm maybe. It's going to be fun to watch them release their players straight into our reach

Suprised our logo wasn't used as article photo.
Better late than never 🙂

And when it's revealed that Manly aren't one of the 11 clubs in question, what say McClymont and co, with their ridiculous assertions?

It follows that if you aren't anywhere near breaching the cap to begin with, you aren't in a position to try and circumvent it.

Hmm i wonder how long before clubs put in a no-confidence vote for Todd and the management?

How can the minimum cap figures not be released for the next 2-3 yrs? if it goes up then awesome but at least the clubs have the ability to plan their priorities in their rosters.

Wishful thinking but maybe we have been quiet on the signing front as our recuitment staff might be sitting back waiting to pick off any players that might be all of a sudden surplus...with the contracted club picking up a portion of the tab. Then again we probably are in the same situation as the rest not knowing the final numbers and therefore not wanting to over commit.

Thing is that it is not necessary for the affected clubs to only have to release some of their top tier contracted players, as it can be any contracted player on their books and regardless of their playing status. Have"t really got much sympathy for the affected clubs. as even allowing for the N R L "s general incompetence , there were no definite assurances that the cap was definitely going to be at a higher level ..However of course there could still be some opportunities for the unaffected clubs to grab some good and useful pickups in coming weeks.

If there are 11 clubs allegedly over the cap, it merely confirms that the whole cap needs to be reviewed and that third party payments need to be eliminated because we currently have about 6 clubs who the bulk of our current state players and player roster inequity is at an all time high. The fans are not stupid, this has happened under Greenturds watch!! Our club has been singled out for the most recent issues and yet other clubs accused have been allowed the benefit of privacy.
