Manly vs Chooks - Rd.2 Player Ratings

Journey Man
Well, it wasn't the outright massacre that most were predicting as we only went down by 8 points in the end after a MUCH improved second half.

So, here are my player ratings.

Brendan Elliot 5/10 - He's only a fill in at fullback, but he wasn't too bad and made some decent runs. I'd be tempted to put him on the wing in place of Jorge when Tom returns.

Jorge Taufua 3/10 - Barely sighted other than his usual poor handling. Got very lucky that the rule is you only have to touch the ball with a foot in touch from a kickoff.

Moses Suli 5/10 - Hardly seen in the first half, goes off injured in the second, then suddenly reappears, gives a great pass for Garrick's break then later is on hand to score his own try.

Brad Parker 4/10 - Was never an attacking threat.

Reuben Garrick 6/10 - This kid is showing good signs. Good pace and backs up well. His pass to Jake was as cool as from someone in only their second first grade game.

Kane Elgey 3/10 - Other than his piss poor missed tackle on Tedesco, did he actually play?

Daly Cherry-Evans 5/10 - Absolutely shocking in the first half, but came to life in the second and showed that he's not a myth.

Toafofoa Sipley 5/10 - Not too bad. Ran hard and tackled well.

Api Koroisau 5/10 - Did OK and his defence was good as usual, but Fainu showed better when he came on.

Martin Taupau 5/10 - Marty needs to run hard at the line and stop skipping before he gets to it.

Joel Thompson 4/10 - Not how he'd have wanted his 200th first grade game to go. Tackled well, but didn't see enough of the ball.

Curtis Sironen 4/10 - Well contained and outplayed by Cordner.

Jake Trbojevic - 6/10 - Tackling was great tonight forcing numerous Chooks knock on's. Ran well too but needs to run more and pass less.....and not get in the way on 5th tackles when attacking their line.

Manase Fainu 7/10 - Sparked the side to life when he came on. Our best on the night despite only playing about half of the game.

Jack Gosiewski 5/10 - Tackled well and didn't get mauled as much as usual when he ran the ball. Brain explosion kick on a 2nd tackle wasn't needed.

Corey Waddell 5/10 - Solid debut and didn't do much wrong.

Kelepi Tanginoa 4/10 - Quiet game from Tangles when he was on.

If I was Des, I'd be very VERY tempted to drop Jorge and put Elliot onto the wing when Tom comes back. I'd also be asking for a lot more involvement from LG, especially in the kicking game.

I wish I could say "when Walker is back".....but I fear that we've seen the last of him in a Manly jumper.

Hopefully having AFB back in the side will stiffen up the forwards.

Can we please play a game this year where its not raining?

That second half gave us false hope. Wallpapering over cracks. Roosters were down to 2 on bench and the Keary went off for HIA. They were just going through the motions.

I do like how Fianu can target that tiring defence though, and he generally takes pretty good options. Score flattered us big time, I think your ratings are pretty spot on, not many above average out there tonight.

I tend to agree that our second half was a bit more flattering than it really was. But it still was better than what we showed in the first half. Regardless of the Chooks being down on troops, we did show fight which was good to see. Most seemed to think it would be a cricket score after that first half "effort".

You said this in another thread but they still had a team packed with grand final winning stars out there.
We didn't.

Manly playing without confidence & have yet to play to their potential. Forwards somewhat pedestrian. Halves not doing their job properly. Elgey not involved enough, not linking on left side. However, he is more talented than Croker who we persisted with for 8 weeks last year till he got injured. Was impressed with Sipley & all bench players added something.

May be a controversial call but how about playing api in the halves and fainu at hooker, LG is doing an impersonation of the invisible man

The only thing I will disagree with is Api in the halves. No way. No effing way.

Jake would make a better 5/8. At least he can pass the ball when he runs to the line. When Api runs he forgets how to pass.

I've been bitching about Api's passing for 3 years now so putting him in 5/8 is probably a stretch. He has heart, can tackle all day and never gives up but can't pass. So no. No 5/8 please.
