Manly Sea Eagles captain Daly Cherry-Evans declares his rep career ‘non-existent’

“MY rep career right now is non-existent. That’s the honest part of it.”

Call him what you will, but right now Daly Cherry-Evans is calling a spade a bloody shovel in a bid to dig himself out of representative obscurity.

Two years ago Daly Cherry-Evans was Queensland’s starting halfback in Origin II in what was viewed as a watershed moment in succeeding Cooper Cronk as the Maroons and Kangaroos No. 7.

He failed to take it and hasn’t played Origin or added to his 11 Australian Test caps since, though he was brought into Queensland camp last year when an ankle injury threatened to again rule Cronk out of action.

In any case Cherry-Evans has since fallen well down the playmaking ranks, trailing the likes of Anthony Milford, Ben Hunt, Michael Morgan, James Maloney and Mitchell Pearce as next in line for higher honours behind automatic starters Cronk and Johnathan Thurston.

“I haven’t played rep footy in a couple of years and I don’t believe I’ve played a level of football that warrants me wearing a rep jersey at the moment.

“That’s one of the big things that I walked away with last year. Understanding where I am in the pecking order. That doesn’t sit well with me.

“That’s something I really do want to change but as clichéd as it sounds, I really do just have to work hard at Manly. I feel as though I am working harder than ever before to right the wrongs of last year.

“That’s not just playing rep football, that’s playing well and rewarding Manly with some good football.”

He’ll do so as Manly’s new skipper after the club announced his elevation to the role last week.

Cherry-Evans’ slide has coincided with that of the Sea Eagles, who have missed the past two finals series and all but razed Brookvale to the ground in rebuilding the club following a golden generation that delivered 10 straight semis appearances.

Just like the maroon and whites’ fortunes in 2017, Cherry-Evans is adamant his own rep aspirations are far from dead and buried.

He’s also under no illusions on how much work it will take to revive them after a 2016 campaign that delivered career lows in his try-assist, tackle bust, running metres and offload tallies, and just one, single line break from 19 games.

“It’s a massive reward and it’s not something that’s just handed out. There are people who never get the chance to play it in their career.

“I had the opportunity to do it and I let that opportunity slide. I’m fortunate enough, I think, that it is in my hands to get that back if I play at a level that I hold myself to, and that my teammates hold me to, I can get back there in a rep jersey.

“Maybe not this year, maybe not next year. But I will be back there.”

Privately his Manly teammates are saying they’ve never seen their star half look better or train harder than this summer, and Trent Barrett has hailed his efforts throughout the pre-season.

Cherry-Evans is confident the same approach will bear fruit come March when the season kicks off proper, admitting a difficult couple of years on both a personal and team front had taken their toll.

“I learnt a lot about myself last year and where I stand as a rugby league player and what I need to improve to be elite again,” he said.

“If it makes sense I’m focusing on being more focused.

“When I’m at training, making sure I’m fully on board with it, with the extras, my recovery and not getting complacent.

“When I do have the chance at training to hone in on those skills, I want to be more focused on that.

“I think the best way to describe it I was falling a little bit complacent at times, and maybe using excuses like injuries and bad scheduling to not put my head down and not work as hard as I could have.”

99% of his current team mates dont have many years experience to judge by !!
Not having the old boys gang hanging around will probably do wonders for his confidence though..

Excellent! Our players and especially our captain must put Manly first. Hopefully 3 or less Manly players get picked for Origin.

One thing I have noticed over the years is that we have far more international players (mostly Pacific Islanders) compared to Origin players.

The less rep players we have the better! Good on you DCE. We shouldn't focus much attention on the Auckland Nines either.

In 2011 .. we had 4 players play SOO, and 4 play Four Nations
In 2008 ...we had 9 players play world cup. (Aust 5, NZ 1, others 3)

I hope we have at least 13 players in the Australian team in 2017, and 17 in the SOO.

As long as Myles is picked again for Qld I'll be happy

ive been critical of dce, his execution mostly but nothing wrong with his attitude in that article. i thought an interview the other day he let the cat out of the bag about the stewart feud in a subtle way. he needs to own this team and it will be easier or even possible with all the retirements.

Put your hand up if you've ever been in a job and had to worry about how the older guard perceived you even if you were doing a stand up job. Now put your hand up if you were paired with someone who wasn't working as expected ( we'll call them wylan dalker and fieran Koran) but those blokes were favourites of management.

DCE is has now been handed the keys to this car. It's not a Ferrari yet maybe a club sport. But watch him go this year.

And he sounds great. Piss off all you knockers who hate the way he speaks. He's trying. The tone of his voice may sound a bit off but some of us understand that. He is the best halfback I've seen at the club. I can only remember from 87 but trust in him this year. You'll be rewarded in spades.

He's better than Mitchel Moses. @Snake

If he has been doing the extras with the goal kicking tee Is what would really please me. He's a natural goal kicker, he kicks field goals off his left foot, most kickers can only dream of off their right. Add to that it would be a physical action that he wanted the extra responsibility as part of now being this teams leader.

What I didn't like about his first interview as captain was this talk he has been reassured he doesn't have to do anything different. What Bull****..... With responsibility and glory comes 1. hard work 2. increased accountability and 3. leading by example.

He is a very special player. The correct call as captain but I'm not sure the player we've seen the last few years has displayed leadership. He has to give us more in all those 3 areas then he has given any other year he has worn out great jumper. Captain is a privilege and not a right. Go show the world your a captain Turtle. If you think you just have to play your natural game, you have a long long way to go.

Can I put my hand down now....bloody aches!

Sounds to me like Cherry has received the shot of life he kind of needed. I do believe it was pretty brutal the way some of the senior players treated him (anyone remember G. Rose pushing the kid away during a game?) but I don't know that that overly affected him.

It wasn't long after that that I heard him say in an interview that Cooper Cronk had the QLD 7 job for as long as he wanted, he (Cherry) could wait. I remember thinking that he seemed to think it was a given that he'd be next, that no other young talent would come along and knock him down the ladder.

Now, after the horror of the Manly backflip (and remember, they backflipped first) and the nightmare reaction from the QLD supporters, I think Cherry may have found the only quality he lacked: humility. And that will go a long way in moulding him as a great champion.

Hope he has a ripper year!

I'm a DCE fan but he is no natural goal kicker - he is atrocious. His ave is 54.9%.
