Something doesn't smell right to me guys. In the past two years:

OUT
1. Addin Fonua-Blake (mid contract)
2. Albert Hopoate
3. Luke Metcalf
4. Joel Thompson
5. Corey Waddell
6. Brendan Elliott
7. Danny Levi
8. Tony Williams
9. Sam Smith (mid contract)
10. Cade Cust (mid contract)
11. Moses Suli (mid contract)
12. Kieran Foran
13. Marty Taupau
14. Dylan Walker
15. Jorge Taufua (likely)
16. Morgan Boyle (likely)
17. Manase Fainu (not included in cap)
18. Sione Fainu (mid contract)
19. Curtis Sironen
20. Tevita Funa
21. Zac Saddler

INS
1. Josh Aloiai
2. Andrew Davey
3. Jason Saab (from reserve grade)
4. Christian Tuipulotu (from reserve grade)
5. Morgan Harper (from reserve grade)
6. Kelma Tuilagi
7. Karl Lawton
8. Ethan Bullemor

RENEWED
1. Taniela Paseka
2. Sean Keppie (fringe first grader)
3. Ben Trbojevic (fringe first grader)
4. Kaeo Weekes (fringe first grader)
5. Daly Cherry-Evans (heavily reduced contract)
6. Tolutau Koula (fringe first grader)

UNSIGNED AT YEARS END
1. Andrew Davey
2. Manase Fainu

OTHER FACTORS
1. Cap went up $90,000 in 2022 (reduced due to COVID)
2. Cap going up $390,000 in 2023

I find it rather off putting that given these changes, we aren't in the stakes for players in and around the league? I struggle to think we'd be anywhere NEAR salary cap strapped?

Was querying the same in a round abouts way in the lodge thread. Noting we are offloading Foz Walker, Marty and probably other lower level guys - lost Sioni Fainu etc. I can only assume we have significantly upgraded others. Otherwise wouldnt we have $$ available for lodge. Not saying we should do it but more querying if we could.

I've come up with this for players I think we have for next year (could be wrong).
The only problem is I am making wild guesses as to contract value without any evidence!
(Also my adding ability is probably unreliable too)

For what it's worth (bugger all) I've got 27 players adding up to 9.98 million. So doesn't leave much to spare...

Parker 300

Harper 200

Koula 250

Tuipulotu 250

Taufua 200

Turbo 1.1m

Weekes 180

Saab 250

DCE 1.2m

Humphreys 250 (now in Top 30, who knew that?!)

Garrick 300

Tuitvake 200

Davey 250

Burbo 200

Bully 300

Haumole 400

Sykes 150

Jake 900

Roumanos 150

Aloia 600

Schuster 500

Lawton 300

Deluis 200

Croker 350

Keppie 350

Paseka 400

Sipley 250

27 players - total 9.98 m

Good start. Some 200k might be closer to 150k however it does highlight how tight it is. Expand this out to 2024 season and see where we are for new players.

Yeah not sure exactly what the minimum is but guys like Fifita Sykes Roumanos may be lower than I estimated. Not likely to play NRL this year, not even sure if we are keeping them next year but if not we'll need similar players on similar pay anyway.

What you don’t know @Ryan are the figures for upgrades.

That could be a telling factor

Yep this is the answer - Garrick and Olakau'atu would of gone from $250K to $400k and beyond.

Also, they had a serious crack at Munster and Angus Crichton is on the shopping list.

No news on Marty yet - we cant afford to lose him but cant afford his price tag, hopefully an agreed downgrade will keep him here.

We seriously need a centre, hooker, prop and back rower.

PS I would doubt DCE was a reduced contract - he is the current Australian half and QLD captain.

It's all wild speculation and therefore hard to discuss.

We dont know that we aren't looking to add a player or two for starters. Our name has been brought up at certain times (eg Cobbo) but any link could be nonsense or some truth.

Also we base salaries on perception or news reports.
News reports often go for the number that makes the story, perhaps not taking into account marquee allowances, 10 year conccessions etc but definitely taking into account performance bonuses.

Dont even get me started on front loading or backloading.

Take a look at Olakau'atu or Schuster, upgraded no doubt but could be anywhere from 300k-600k or more, who knows.

Jake often reported as 900k but does that include bonuses for rep selection? Will he be less under the cap this year? Does he have long setvice or marquee concessions. Is the 900 under the cap or is it 850, 800, 700.

Wild wild wild speculation

The cap is definitely tight and it’s due to upgrades. Ironically, it was our good season last year that’s made the future difficult. There’s a host of others, but take a guy like Saab for example...he came over with 7 Fg games of experience, yet to establish himself as a regular first grader and took a modest deal to get away from Saints for an opportunity.

Suddenly he plays 25+ games and scores 25 tries. Bam! Manly must negotiate an upgrade for a player that was previously on a pittance. Hypothetically it can happen like this - “Sorry Jason, we’re already stretched for 22’ so the bulk of your upgrade will be paid in 23’ and 24’ when Taupau is no longer on the books, etc.”

I’m not saying Saab is on 800k lol of course not, but there are others that were also upgraded, so the accumulative impact of that eventually amounts to more than just Taupau’s dollar value.

The upgrades make sense, but I wouldn’t be surprised if there is some left for the right player. Or there are 1or2 moved on like cust was. The foz decision I suspect was more about common sense than cap, but they can’t say that out loud.

Yeah humphreys has been in top 30 for a fair while now.

Foz and Walker exiting next season , Marty and more then likely Jorge and Boyle as well . and only Tuilagi recruited . Fair bit of cap value leaving and even allowing for upgrades , should be still a bit of cap space available . Main problem still seems to be presently and in recent times getting close to full value out of the top cap recipients . D C E sometimes , Turbo usually when he is available and match fit , Jake [ well he always really tries to go close ] and Marty [ not for quite a few seasons now ] Anyway still have the basis of a good side going forward , hopefully Turbo can shake of his injury prone status and a much better run with injuries in general for the squad ,, . Fainu may be available soon and the real consistency and better playing style can get that serious competitive level back again .

DCE is still on the same deal for this year and 2023. New deal doesn't kick in until 2024.

Haumole, Schuster, Garrick have all been upgraded too.

Thank you Ryan. I am glad I am not the only one that see,s that

We need to get Uncle Nicks bloke in, he,ll show us how to fix it, if not then things are going to be very grim for a very long time. The future aint looking so bright . Anyway I have said what I think about the cap. Me and my mate discuss it every week and still end up shaking our heads as to why we never have the cap space for any Marquee players. You can chuck out all the figures you want but to me,it still doesnt add up. Maybe we need new people in the office, recruiting ,the whole place because we need to get back to the power house we used to be which seems a very long way away. At least Ryan seems to understand where I am going With this

Seems pretty obvious to me, that if we are tight on the cap with this squad, and given what @Ryan has outlined above, then we are clearly paying "well overs" to more than a few players...
