Manly legend Graham Lowe believes the club needs a ‘‘big stick’’ and a ‘‘good dose of Ken Arthurson’’ to remedy the cultural problems engulfing the scandal-plagued club.

The comments come as rookie Manase Fainu engaged the lawyer who acted on behalf of Sydney balcony killer Simon Gittany after being charged with filming a sex act with a woman without her consent.

It is the latest scandal in a dreadful year for Manly where they have constantly been in the headlines.

The dramas on the northern beaches include:

  • the club being found to have rorted the salary cap;
  • the Gladstone strip-joint incident involving skipper Daly Cherry-Evans;
  • Jackson Hastings being overlooked for first-grade selection after his blow-up with Cherry-Evans;
  • Darcy Lussick launching into the culture of the Silvertails after being forced out of the club;
  • Anthony Watmough launching a stunning verbal attack on Cherry-Evans;
  • persistent rumours coach Trent Barrett is considering walking out;
  • speculation Manly's owners want to sell;
  • diabolical performances on the field, which have left them in contention for the wooden spoon.

The minute they made the decision to sack Tooves they let the bad sh*t in and it's hung over the joint since.
Only the burning of a Zorba effigy can cleanse the place.
Better not make it life size or it'll burn for years...

The first thing that the great Arko would do next season is sign a proven high profile experienced coach to rebuild our culture and have the other two as his assistants .
We had one in 2V's but I agree we need to see this happen
I want 2V's back but think mag m or ivan c if we could drag him away from the tigers is what we need.

Those who like to cite events like Gladstone and the Fainu affair as evidence we’ve lost the famous Manly culture might have short memories.

Fact is keeping a bunch of NRL players on the straight and narrow has never been an easy task.

Easily our biggest and most damaging scandals of the last 10 years have been these 3:

1.Boozy season launch in 2009, which generated massive negative exposure over a long period, largely but not solely due to the allegations against Brett Stewart. 18 months later Stewart was cleared, on 29 September 2010.

2.Match-fixing investigation – scandal broke June 2016 regarding alleged match-fixing during 2015. 18 months later, Manly and Manly players were cleared in October 2017

3.Salary cap rorting – allegations published 5 July 2017 that Manly may have breached the cap during earlier seasons, later investigated and found guilty. Currently under appeal – 12 months later and the bad publicity is still going. Will we be cleared of this one, too?

Meanwhile, as to players stuffing up to some degree or another, here’s a sample, I'm sure there have been others, and it seems some players stuff up regardless of who is coaching at the time.

Absolute bloody nonsense .... the first, second and third thing Ken always did was to stick solid, and he may just have the phrase "never bag your own" as his epitaph ....... certainly qualities in short supply around here .......

.... and during his reign .... more indiscretions from the Brookie Hotel, Harbord Hilton, players bedrooms and all cardinal points. were covered up and smothered than one will ever imagine .....

I agree Ken covered up everything and he had everything under control including under performing personnel
One thing that Ken never stuck solid was with mediocre as he always had the cheque book ready to buy his way out of inept performers
In Kens time our club was always competitive because under Ken he had no time for Mediocre performers .
The Qualities are not in short supply around here in our sacred forum because most of us are very proud supporters and have high standards and high expectations and we don't put up with the sht that this coaching staff is dishing out and tarnish our great Manly reputation .
Ken was always a winner not like the losers that we have coaching our team .
Our season is over and we are also over these impersonating NRL standard coaches .

Mate much bigger issues in the club than just poor coaches.

Mate much bigger issues in the club than just poor coaches.
Every one in our club is responsible including the coaches . Every one is playing their role .
I don't think Penn trains , selects players or makes any game plans for the team
