Manly Moneyball

Realistically with the Trobivic bros, DCE and Marty on Massive coin, I think we all need to be a little accepting on who we can sign.
Bullemor is a great signing and Momirovski though not an exciting David Staggs type signing, is the type of player who can do an admirable job.
There is also a crop of junior guns coming through and I feel 2-3 will make it into the side by 2023.
It's now a case of "Moneyball" signings where we need the right positions strengthened and players with good character who buy into the system seemlessly without disrupting the culture we have almost rebuilt to the glory days.
I also feel those waiting for Marty to go to give money to a new star signing will be disappointed yet happy, as this will be used to retain gun players emerging who will be integral in a Powerful Manly team already home grown in our own backyard.

@maxta love your posts but I have a pet hate about how money ball theory is represented in the NRL.

If you have not read the book this is a worthwhile read The Economics of Moneyball

It not only about picking up players on the cheap but looking for an unfair advantage in how the game is played (or where players are valued)

An example of this would be the article around Des and completion rates - he might now look to recruit players who have more errors in them (for cheaper) if they are better in another area he values. The other area where this is different from a trade perspective - something that the NRL is only really starting to get to grips with in an even salary cap spenmd era

Interesting thoughts.

There’s no doubt Des loves his stats.

Just not sure which ones though.

HI Isz - always value your opinion mate so no probs at all and I get your point.
I have not read the book, but didn't mind the movie with Brad Pitt playing hardball.
I'm not a Massive stats man to be honest and have my own mixed up formula's with most sports that many would probably find left field....but I was more pointing to the fact with so much of the cap eaten up by key long term players, we need to use a strategy that brings in the "right" players including attitude and values along with maybe those hidden players with rough edges (I refer to ability, not a poor attitude creating problems), that "can" be smoothed to enable quality at shrewd value.... .
Good friends with a couple of NRL player managers and the system is cut throat and the eyes on talent have scouts all over the country, so often when there is a super talent being left alone, there is a story behind it....
