Rabbitohs Penalty! Jamie Buhrer gives away a penalty while in possession for obstruction late in the tackle count letting the Rabbitohs off the hook.

Clearly we failed to understand the interpretation of what constitutes laying in the ruck too long last night.

Therein lies the problem, like Hasler and Cartwright mentioned last week, every ref has a different interpretation of what is considered too long. Makes it difficult for players to judge. Consistency would be nice.

Most of these penalties are subjective ones. Holding down, markers not square, off side etc. All teams infringe on these rules, they are coached to. So how do the refs explain that they conveniently noticed our infringements but not Souths ?? I can't believe that Souths didn't hold down one of our players in the tackle till the 72nd minute !! The game well and truly over by then so they obviously started taking the P by setting up camp in the ruck....must have been awkward for Hayne and Perenara to finally have to blow a penalty for something they had been letting go all night.

If every ref has a different interpretation why compound the problem by having two pinkies making calls?

And that is merely the list of penalties. The list of calls re knock ons, ball strips, tackling into touch etc would all be in favour of Souths.

38th minute Jamie B had the ball stripped in a 3 man tackle right on the Souths goal line. Scrum called.

Issac Luke was penalised just before that for a hold down, but unlike the Souths piggy back penalties, this was in Souths half with Manly on the attack. No question it was a penalty.

Early in the game a Souths player in attack tried to take a catch near the Manly line but jumped early & came down pulling Matai over with him. No penalty. Hayne very sternly told Lyon off in no uncertain terms.

That 49th minute penalty on the 5th tackle was by Ben Teo trying to play the ball too fast & before he had got back to his feet. Ballin did nothing.

The problem with most of the piggy back penalties was not Manly's lack of discipline or from pushing the rules, but from their inability not to get "played" by Souths & the referees to duly get "milked".

Manly & Roosters don't seem to play the same type of game that Souths & Storm do. Macguire was assistant to Bellamy at the Storm.

The penalty count is not so much the import factor it is when and where they are given, we are usually penalised on the fourth/fifth tackle (giving the opposition almost an additional set of 6). However penalties awarded to us are usually on the first or second tackle, often two in as many tackles thereby minimising the benefit.
Ricky Stuart also made the valid point that although his team deserved to be penalised the opposition were doing the exact same thing and not being penalised

souffs win every 50/50 in most games they play - this is as valuable as being given all the penalties

All this confirms what we all know and what Toovey stated last night - the refs are controlling the outcome of too many games

We keep harping on about the Refs when it is pointless energy wasted. The only thing we can control is our own performance lets take the refs out of the equation should always be the aim and goal.

I'd buy that if they weren't laying in there as long or longer

AWESOME - and a full joke at the same time
really suss reffing, really suss

It really makes you wonder whether some of these referees are on the take or have bets on the games given some of the decisions that they make

I can take the usual interpretation on the spot penalties but can anyone explain the tackle by Horo on Inglis. He clearly grabbed him around the shoulder, there was no hit to the head yet after a laydown dog act the video ref sees a penalty and a report. That wasn't incompetent officialdom it was BLATANT BIAS.
Also isn't the rule where progress has stopped if a player isn't on his feet that the tackle is called held??
Horo getting dragged over the sideline was again nothing more than BLATANT BIAS.
Manly pushing Souths players back in the tackle while their feet are still on the ground but the refs are screaming held at them as soon as we start to push backwards. BLATANT BIAS

The Horo tackle totally agree with you, to me if we are losing games due to Ref decisions we need to do better. Storm were clinical when it counted we look overly pretty and less effective.

110% right, all year we lose and we blame the refs......simple ..... Get better and take them out of the equation!!

I know , hard to do when you are playing 17 not 13 BUT if you are better than the opposition you will win.

Don't forget we won 6 straight against lesser teams.

I agree we need to do better. Kite and Lawrence 7 runs each for 70 meters just wasn't good enough from our engine room. No coincidence when Choc went off we pretty much capitulated BUT these games come down to critical decisions at critical times and those officials failed at every moment to provide a top class game with top class decisions, Do you not agree ?

I agree Jethro. There seems to be one side favoured in each match.

Isnt that funny. I remember watching the game back when I was a kid and thinking the same thing. Shame we can have these same thoughts after all these years.

I have no problem with the refs blowing 10 penalties against us last night, you break the rules then you cop a penalty, simple as that. What I do have a problem with is that they only blew 5 against Souths. There were two teams out there last night and one was definitely not twice as disciplined as the other, they were just allowed to get away with at least twice as much

To be perfectly honest, we need to lose the nobody likes us we don't care poor us attitude/mentality. If we do not give them an opportunity to penalize us they can't. It's the same blokes giving away the same penalties every week. The Matai try was bull**** and some calls were 50/50 but until we show some discipline we have no right to complain about referees decisions.
